ANDREW YUROW, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
DETACHABLE BUTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oet. 24, 1916.
Application led November 16, 1915. Serial No. 61,754.
To all whom t may concern.' Y
vBe it known that I, ANDREW YUnow, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Buttons, of which the following is a specification. y.
This invention relatesk to improvements in buttons and'particularly of the detachable type, used for practical and ornamental purposes.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an efficient locking means for button mountings whereby they may be attached to the supporting article in a positively secure manner or detached at will.
Another object is the provision of such locking means in attractive forms capable of being ornamented in harmony with the button heads' and articles to which they are to be applied.
. These and other objects of like character are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a button and mounting` made in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, taken on the center line of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of F 2, parts being broken away. Fig. 4 is a similar sectional view showing a modification. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the button setting. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is another plan view showing a modification. Fig. 8 isy a sectional view of Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is a sectional view taken on line 9 9 of Fig. 3, and Fig. l0 is a similar sectional view, taken on line 10-10 of Fig. 4.
In the drawing the numeral 20 is applied to the head, which may be of any ornamental character as shown in Fig. 1, in which a circular stone is shown held by the setting 21 from which extends an arm 22 having a bent portion 23 formed at its end with a hinge 24 by which it is connected 'to the clamp carrying element. The swinging clamp 30 engages the hinge 24 byits bent arm 31, the main portion having a narrow slot or'kerf` 32 extending longitudinally inward from one edge at about the center of thickness as shown best in Figs. 2, 4 and 10. Iivoted on the pin 33 is Va' catch 34 freely movable 1n the slot and having a knob 35 extending slightly outward at one end,`while Y terial 38, as rubber, is secured in the slot 32,
opposite the knob 35, tending to keep the yclamp engaged with the stem, but permitting the knob to be pressed inwardly, thus freeing the stem when desired. In Figs. 4 and 10, a fiat spring 39 is used to perform the same function.
Figs. 5 and 6 and Figs. 7 and 8 merely show variations in structure of the button head elements, illustrating the setting of small stones 40.
In operation, the stem 27y is inserted in an appropriate opening formed in the article upon which the button'is to be attached and the clamp 30 raised so the catch 34 will engage in the slot 26; vwhen it is desired to remove the button the knob 35 is pressed whereupon the stem is released.
IVhile the foregoing illustrates the preferred embodiments of the invention it will be understood that modifications and variations may be made without departing from the scope of the annexed claims.
Having thus described the invention and ascertained its general structure, function and manner of ope-ration, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:-
1. In a detachable button, the combination with a pair of hinged members, one carrying the button head and an oppositely disposed recessed stem, of a single catch pivoted in the other member engageable withthe recess in said stem, means for normally maintaining said catch in operative position and means for releasing said catch integrally formed therewith.
2. In a detachable button, the combination with a head, a stem depending rigidly therefrom and an arm extending outward, of a clamp element hingedly connected to said arm and having an opening receptive of said stem, a single flat catch pivoted in y said clamp element engageable with a recess formed in saidstem and means for nor 1nal1"`1`naintainin said catch in enfra ement.
3. In a detachable button, the combina tion with a head, a stem depending rigidly therefrom and a bent arm extending outward, of a clamp element hingedly con nected to said bent arlnand having an opening receptive of said stem, a single pivoted Catch operatively combined with said clamp element engageable with said stem and `means for disengaging said stemintegrally Y formed with said catch.`
sadhead neary the end of said bar, said stein being recessed and engageable with an opening formed in the other` bar element Said second bar element having a longitudinal slot formed laterally therein, of a single plate catch pivoted in the mentioned slot g having a portion engageable with the recess 1n said stem7 resilient ineansfor holding said catchk in an engage-able position and a knob formed with said catch for releasing said stem.
Signed at New York, lin the county of New York and State oi New York this 10th day of November A. D. 1915-.
