Description

@WILLlAM HUEY.
Improvement in Step Ladders. No. 120,158 Patented Oct.2 4,1871.
Alli-0m UNITED STATES PATENT CFFICE.
WILLIAM HUEY, OF GALENA, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEP-LADDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,158, dated October 24, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HUEY, of Galena, in the county of Kent and in the State of Maryland, have invented an Improved Step-Ladder; and do hereby declare that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth thcnature and principles ofmy said improvement, by which my invention may be distin guished from others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
My invention relates to that class of ladders known as step or fruit-1adders and the nature thereof consists in certain modifications and improvements in the details of the construction of the same, hereinafter described andshown.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates my invention and forms a part of the specification thereof, Figure l is a view in perspective, representing the ladder in position ready for use.
The rear support-s or legs 0 are pivoted to and within the said check pieces by means of screwbolts, and are secured together by means of the cross-pieces D E F. The upper cross-piece D is provided with projections 61 which catch against the rear portions of the cheek-pieces and thus hold the legs in position. In order to afl'ord an additional stay to the rear supports on the inner sides of the cheek-pieces are cut angular notches, against the shoulders of which the said supports rest. K designates a vertical strip, attached to the top of which is the table L. The said strip passes upward through a staple, H, attached to the cross-piece E and an aperture cut in the platform 0, and is held in any desired position by means of the spring-tappet P, which catches automatically in the notches R cut in the said strip.
The operation and advantages of the adjustable table thus formed in gathering firuit, painting, 850., will be obvious without further description.
Having described the c nstruction and operation of the various parts of my invention, I claim- The combination of strip K, table L crosspiece E provided with the staple H, platform 0, and spring-tappet P, when operating together, as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 23d day of June, 1871.
