To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROY G. GonnIeAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Travelers Safety-Vests; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the. characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.

This invention relates to improvements in safety appliances and particularly to apparel to' be used by travelers upon boats, the object of the invention being to produce a vest to be worn by such travelers while on the boats which can be readily inflated with a sufiicient amount of air to cause them to have a sufficient buoyancy to sustain the weight of the wearer upon the water in case of accidents of any kind by reason of which the persons who are wearing the vest are precipitated into or compelled to jump into A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.

These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of the parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following-specification and claim.

In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved vest. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken on a line XX of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary View showing the tubes for inflating the air compartments in the vest.

Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the vest is composed primarily of two parts 1 and 2 arranged to be laced together, as at 3, in the back whereby the vest may be adjusted to fit different. persons. The front of the vest is provided with fastening straps 4 which also allow of a proper adjustment of the vest to the body of the wearer. The parts 1 and 2 are made of rubber or other similar material and each is provided with front and rear air compartments 1 and 2 The compartments 1 and 1 and 2 and 2 extend to points adjacent each other on the shoulder of the parts 1 and 2 and each is provided with an inflating tube 1 and 1 respectively for the part 1, and 2 and 2 respectively for the part 2. The tubes 1 and 1 extend through a common tube 1 of sufficient length to be projected into the mouth of the wearer of the vest for inflating both of the compartments 1 and 1? respectively. The tubes 1 and 1 are also provided with valves 5 and 6 respectively to prevent any escape of the pressure from the compartments 1 and 1 Similarly, the tubes 2 and 2 extend through a single tube 2 and are provided with valves the same as the tubes 1 and 1.

WVhen a person goes upon a boat for pas sage by Water he wears my improved vest underneath his other clothing, the same being made to fit him properly by means of the lacing 8 and buckles 4. In case of acc'ident he inflates the compartments lf and 1 by the use of the tube 1 and likewise inflates the compartments 2 and 2 by use of the tube 2 the inflation of the said parts 1 1 2 and 2 respectively causing a sufficient air pressure to cause the buoyancy of the vest to sustain the weight of the wearer when in the water. This, as can readily be seen, does away with the necessity of applying life preservers which is always more or less unsatisfactory due to the confusion and haste in time of an accident and also a great number of persons do not know how to properly apply the same with the result that they are worse than useless. By the use of my improved safety vest, however, the same is continuously worn while thewearer is on the water and the only thing which remains to be done in case of accident is to inflate the compartments which can be done almost instantaneously or even after the wearer is in the water.

From the foregoing description it will readily be seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the object of the invention as set forth herein.
