-LIFE-SAVI1\TG SUIT. Y
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 1915.
Application filed January 9, 1915. Serial No. 1,332.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, PAUL SIMON, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Perth Amboy, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Life-Saving Suits, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a life saving suit for aeronauts and has as its principal object to provide a device of this character which persons engaged in the above said pursuit may continuously wear during flights in the air without too much inconvenience and which is always ready for use in emergency cases.
A further object of my device is to save the life of a person in case of a fall from an air-craft either on land or on water.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device which will aflord the utmost possible convenience to the wearer thereof while floating in water.
My present invention is practically the same as another invention for Letters Patent on which I am applying at the same time, relating to a life-saving suit for passengers aboard water-craft, with such changes only as are necessary to attain the further objects the present invention has and reference will be had in the description of my present invention to the before-mentioned application to avoid repetition.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation and Fig. 2 a rear elevation of my device worn by a person, ready for use. Fig. 3 is a plan view and Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a part of my device.
The same reference character designates the same part throughout the several views.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 5 is a suit substantially the same as described in the application referred to on the foregoing page, having airtight pockets 6 and 7 at the front and back portions, respectively, and channels 8 made of the same material connecting them at either side with air-tight pockets 9 and 10 on the leg-portions. The difieronce is that the pocket 7 at the back portion of the suit 5 is continued in a hose 11 of the same material, connecting it with a helmetlike bag 12 secured to the head of the wearer, also of airtight material, fitting closely on the head and which also will be inflated by the air blown into the pockets through the pipe 13 and air-valve 14. The sleeves 15 are the same as in the suit described in my application above referred to.
The shoe-portion 16 of the suit is, in my present invention, provided with rubber soles 17 having cars such as 18 a pair near the toe portions of each, and one pair near the heel portions of each, and attached by straps such as 19 to each rubber sole is another rubber sole 20, the straps passing through the cars 19 with which the rubber soles 20 are also provided. Each of the rubber soles is provided at the sides facing each other with studs as 21, two side-by-side near the toe portion and one each near the heel portions. Springs such as 22 are between each pair of soles held in position by the studs 21 engaging the ends thereof.
A person wearing this suit, if falling from the air, will always fall feet downward, the center of gravity being well below the waist on account of the air-filled pockets on the front and rear-portions of the suit and the helmet-like bag on the head and also on account of the additional weight of the double soles attached to the feet. The springs between the rubber soles will considerably mitigate the force of the impact on landing on the ground and prevent a fatal accident. On the other hand, falling into water, the person will be saved from drowning by the air-tight pockets keeping the wearer of the suit afloat and the suit being of watertight material, eliminates much of the inconvenience of the direct contact of the Water with the body of the person.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A life-saving suit for aeronauts comprising, in combination, a suit made of watertight material, provided with a plurality of airtight pockets and an airtight helmet all communicating with each other through channels made of the same material, means soles to keep said springs securely in posifor inflating said air-tight pockets and heltion, substantially as and for the purpose met with air from the lungs ofthe wearer, set forth.
said suit terminating at the lower extremi- PAUL SIMON. 5 ties in double rubber soles connected with Witnesses:
each other by straps, springs between each WILLIAM F. KUEHNE,
pair of sol-es and means integral with said STEFE TASY.
