Be it known that I, WiLLIAM D. HaLnnfr, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Retort-Doors, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to va retort door. One of the -objects of the present inventionis to provide a simple, rigid, easily operated door, particularly designed for hermetically sealing on closing retorts, digesters, bulkhead openings, or containers in general which are subjected to internal pressure causedby steam, air, water or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a door which'is cheap and practical t0 construct; and to provide means for applying a great external pressure which may be uniformly distributed over the door, thus tight closure.
Further objects will hereinafter appear.
rlhe invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed7 having reference'to the accompanying drawings, in whichj Figure 1 is a front view of the retort, showing the application of the door. Fig. 2 is a cross section on lineV 2--2, Fig. 1.

More particularly described, A indicates the retort proper on which issuitably secured a door frame'2. Formed on one side of the frame is a plurality of hinging lugs,
such as indicated at 3, and formed in the face of the door frame is an annular dovetail-shaped groove 4 inwhich a packing material, constructed of rubber, asbestos or like material, is mounted. Adapted to form a hermetic seal or closure for the opening 5 formed in the door frame is a door 6. This dooris constructed of cast iron or like suitable material, and it is suitably reinforced with internal ribs 7. The ribs may be placed horizontally or vertically, or botli, and a sufficient number may be applied'to give the door suilicient strength and rigidityagainst the pressure applied.
Formed on one side of the door isa pair of lugs 8 which project between the hinge lugs 3. These lugs are provided with elliptical-shaped slots, such as indicated at 9, and a pin 24 extending through the'lugs 3 and the elliptical openings in the lugs 8 form Specification of Letters Patent.

against the gasket to form a'pressure-tight' seal between the frame and door. This is accomplished as follows: Referring to Fig. 1, it will be seen that each hinge, consists of three sets of lugs 3, 3a and 3b and. that the door proper is hinged between the lugs 3 and 3a. Pivotally mounted 'between the lugs 3a and 3b is a pair of bolts 12, one for-each cross bar, which extend through drilled holes 13 formed in the outer ends of the cross bars. The outer ends of these bolts are threaded and are provided with nuts 14 -by which the cross bars, with connected door, may be forced inwardly against the packmg; the elliptical openings in the door lugs 8 permitting this adjustment. v
Formed -in the opposite end of each cross bar 1s a lug 15, and adapted to be swung into and out of engagement with same is a U-shaped link 16 which is pivotally mounted, vas at 17, on lugs 18 formed on the door f rame. Mounted in the outer end of each link 16 is a screw lever 19, which, when in register with lug 15, may be turned to force the bars and connected door inwardly against the packing. l
A great external pressure may thus be applied to the door by means of the nut 14 and the screw lever 19, and this pressure may be evenly distributed on the face of ther door by means of clamps 20 fitted between the webs of the bars. y ()ne pair of clamps 20 has been provided for each cross bar and the position of' eachclamp may be independently' of same to engage the center portion ofthe door. Three contacting points may thus be made by each cross bar as the b ar will en` gage the center of the door while the clampthe upper hinge bolt 24 is suliciently ex-v tended to pass througha pair of lugs 25 formed on the upper edge of the door frame. Pivotally mounted between said lugs and adapted to swingv about the hinge bolt in unison with the door and cross bars is a straining rod or brace 26. The outer end of this rod passes through a lug 27 formedv on the door, and a nut 30 mounted on the outer end of this rod not only serves to keep the straining rod in place but may also be tightened up to such an extent as to hold the door in position, or, in other words, to prevent sagging or settling of the door.
A door constructed as here shown is rigid in construction and may be cheaply manufactured and quickly opened or closed in actual practice'. It may, furthermore, be adjusted from time to time as the packing compresses or settles both from the hinge side of the door and the lock side. A perfect seal against internal pressure may thus at all times be maintained.
The materials and finish of the severa parts of the device are such as the experience and judgment of the manufacturer may dictate.
-I wish it understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims, and that I do lnot wish to limit myself to the specific design and construction here shown.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Y 1. In a retort door, the combination with a frame having anl opening formed therein, of a door adapted toform a closure for said opening, hinge lugs formed on the frame,
lugs on the door extending .between the hinge lugs, said door lugs having ellipticalshapedl openings formed therein, pins extending through the lugs forming pivotsv about which the door may be swung, cross bars extending across the exterior face of the door and carried by the door, a bolt extending through the outer end of leach cross bar, said bolts being; carried by the door hinge pins and adapted to swing around same in unison with 'the door, a nut on the outer end of each bolt, and a pivotally mounted adjustable .locking member engageable with the other end of eacli cross bar.
2. In a retort door, they combination with a frame having an opening formed therein, of a door adapted to form a closure for said opening, hinge lugs formed-on the frame, lugs` or the door Vextending between the hinge lugs, said door lugs having ellipticalshaped openings formed therein, pins extending through the lugs forming pivots about which the door may be swung, cross mounted adjustable locking member engagei able with the other end of each cross bar, and a pair of independently adjustable clamping members engageable with the face of the door mounted in each cross bar.
3. A closure of the character described comprising a fra-me having an opening formed therein, a door hinged on the frame to form a closure for the opening, a pair of cross bars extending across the face of the door, adjustable hinge connections between one end of each cross bar and the frame, means for forcing the other ends of the cross bars against the frame, a strain rod connected at one end with the upper hinge and having its other end extending through a lug on the door, and a nut on said end engageable with the lug.
4. ln a retort door, the combination with a frame having an opening formed therein,
lugs on the door extending between the hinge lugs, said door lugs having ellipticalshaped openings formed therein, pins extending through the lugs forming pivots about which theJ door may be swung, cross bars extending across the exterior face of the door and carried by the door, said cross bars presenting slightly curved faces so as to Contact with thedoor midway between their ends, a bolt extending through the outer end of each cross bar, said bolts-being `carried by the door hinge pins and adapted to swing around same in unison with the door, a nut on the outer end of each bolt, a pivotally mounted adjustable locking member engageable with the other end of each cross bar, a pair of independently adjustable clamping members engageable with the face vof the door mounted in each cross bar, a strain rod connected at one end with the upper hinge and having its other end extending through a lug on the door, and a nut on said end engageable with the lug.
5.' The combination with a frame having an opening formed therein and a door adapted to form a closure for the opening, of hinge lugs formed on the frame, lugs on the door having elongated openings formed therein, pins extending through the lugs forming pivots about which the door swings, means engageable with the door on lil@ mossos mounted between the hinge lugs, a cross' bar on the door through which the pivotally mounted bolt extends and a nut on the bolt engageable with the cross-bar to adjust the position of the door with relation to the hinge lugs.
7. The combination with a door, of a cross-bar being curved on its inner side as described, a bolt adjustably securing each end of the cross-bar to the door, a pair of adju-sting screws mounted in the cross-bar and engageable with the surface of the door,
a -door frame having an opening formed therein which the door is V'adapted to close,
a pair of hinge lugs on the door frame, a bolt having one end pivotally mounted in said lugs and the other end extending through one end of the cross-bar, a nut on the bolt engageable with the arm to adjust the position of the door with relation to the hinge lugs, and means engageable with the opposite end of the cross-bar to force the door against the frame.
