Description

RICHARD WEBB-Buisman, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. I
HINGE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. i6, 1918.
Original application led August 30, 1912, Serial No. |717,927. Divided and this application led May 28,
i915. serial-No. 31,061.
To all whom z't may concern.'
Be it known that I, RICHARD W. BURNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, State of Illinois, United States of America, have invented` certaln new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates particularly to hinges For full comprehension, however, of my.
invention reference must be had tothe accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts, and wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of Va dump car hopper taken on a line extending transversely relatively to the car;
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the en" gaging edges of the hinge members of the door and door-frame; and
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the door of the car withl my invention applied thereto.
The hopper floor is indicated at b and the ends at c, the floor extending from the center sill d lto within close vertical plane of the side s1ll e, thus placing the dischargeiopening approximately perpendicularly. The dump door f is hinged to the lower edge of the floor member and engages pockets in the side edges of the ends and a flange g upon the side sill, and it is clamped in its shut position, after having been manually closed, by a rock shaft t, carrying a series of dogs m.
With doors of this'type and applied in the manner described to hoppers through which granular commodities are discharged, while the free edges are effectively closed against leakage by the clamping appliances described, the hinged edge has been heretofore roximity of theA a source of trouble owing to leakage due to wear, imperfect fittings, and, in some cases, inherent weakness unless constructed from extra heavy materials.
In order to overcome these defects the hinge comprises a pair of hinged plate members n and o respectively each equal in length to the hinged edge of the door. One side edge of the plate n is secured'to the hopper iioor and the opposite side edge is bent back in hook form as at p. The other plate is secured to the door and its free edge is also bent back in hook form the bent back portion on this plate however is provided with an angular extension 1 which is constructed and arranged to engage the free edge of the plate n when the door is in closed position, thus preventing relative lateral dis; placement of the hinge plates in one direction.
tiguous to the hinge member m, and is adapted to be engaged by the bent back portion of the plate 'o when thedoor is in such open position. This angle iron is essential in hinge constructions the members of which n are not interlocking in all positions.
What -I claim is as follows:
1. The combination with a hopper and a door for closing the discharge end of the same; of a hinge connecting the door to the hopper, said hlnge consisting of a pair of members presentlng engaging bent edges, each bent edge extending continuously from end to end of the part hinged and one of such bent edges being adapted to inclose and grip the other bent edge when ythe door is closed, and means preventing relative lateral displacement of the hin ed members.
2. The combination with a hopper door;
- of a hinge consisting of a pair of members presenting engaging bent edges, each bent edge extending continuously from end to end 0f the part hinged and one of such bent edges being adapted to ip the other bent edge when the door is c osed, and an angle iron upon one of the hin e members for preventing relative lateral displacement thereof.
3. The combination with a hopper and a' door; of a hinge connecting the door to the hopper, said hinge consistlng of a air of members each member having one si e edge lot thereofben't back in hook form' the bentback iin testimony vvhereo'f have signed my portion of one of such members having an name to this specification 1n the presence of 1e inward radial extension adapted to engage two witnesses.
and grip the free edge of the other member When the door is in closed position for the v v RXCHARD WEBB BURNETT purpose of preventing relative lateral dis- Witnesses: placement of the hinge members and to pre- WILLIAM HnWETsoN,
sent a grain-tight joint. GORDON Gr. COIOKE.
