PIPE-WRENCH.
Application filed February 7, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. NEWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bigpine, in the county of Inyo and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin PipeWVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches and more particularly to pipe wrenches adapted to be employed for turning pipes and fittings in places where space is restricted and where the ordinary pipe wrench could not be conveniently used.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a pipe wrench that can be lowered into a trench and operated from the edge thereof when a pipe, lying in a trench too small to admit the operator, is desired to be turned. j
A further object of this invention isthc provision of a pipe wrench which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, butdurable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my in vention, in which,

Referringnow to the drawing by numerals which'indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 indicates a rod which is formed as an extension of the handle of the wrench which may be of any desired length, and ears 2 are provided at the lower end of the rod 1, at opposite sides thereof, for the reception of pipe gripping jaws 3. Teeth 4: are formed upon the inner faces of the jaws 3 and the cutting edges of 'the'teeth' on one jaw are disposed at an opposite angle to the teeth on the opposite jaw so that the teeth may tightly grip the pipe when the wrench is adjusted thereto.
The jaws 3 are provided upon their outer faces with lugs 5 which are adapted to receive the ends of connecting rods 6 through Specification of Letters Patent.

The adjusting plate 8 is mounted upon the rod 1 which extends through a circular opening 9 provided in the center of the adjusting plate 8 and the said plate is adapted to slide up or down on the rod 1. Lugs 10 are formed on the lower side of the adjusting plate 8, and are provided with apertures in which the pivot pins 11 are received, and the upper ends of the rods 6 are also provided with apertures through which the pivot pins 11 are extended. It will be noticed, by referring to Fig. 4, that the contour of the adjusting plate is substantially of a parallelogram form and is provided at its opposite ends with upstanding tongues 12, which are bent at a right angle for providing a shelf 13. Mounted upon the rod 1 is a hollow sleeve 14 which has screw threads 15 formed thereon for the greater part of its length. A slot 16 is formed upon opposite .rod 1. By securing the disk to the rod 1 the sleeve is rigidly held against movement with respect to the rod.
' Screw threadedly mounted upon the sleeve 14L is an adjusting nut 17 and which has mounted on 1ts under face, a guide washer .18 which is divided into halves as indicated by Fig. 3 of the drawing. By this method of construction, the washer 18 can be easily and quickly assembled and attached to the adjusting nut 17, by means of screws 19. An annular recess 20 is provided in the lower face of the adjusting nut 17 for the reception of the tongues 12, and the washers are adapted to underlie the shelves 13 of the tongues 12 as clearly indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
In the operation of the wrench, we will suppose that a pipe is lying in a trench which is too narrow to admit a workman. The wrench is lowered into the trench from the edge thereof andthe adjusting nut operated or turned upon the threads of the sleeve 14 so as to raise the connecting rods and thereby open the jaws 3. The jaws 3 will then, of course. straddle the pipe. whereupon the adjusting nut 17 is turned downwardly on the threads, which causes the adjusting plate 8 to move downwardly on the rod 1, and through the medium of the connecting rods (5, close the jaws 3 upon the pipe, and where, by virtue of the oppositely opposed teeth of the jaws, the pipe may be tightened or loosened according to the desire of the operator.
From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable wrench has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood however, that slight changes or modifications in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
I claim:
1. A pipe wrench including a rod, jaws pivotally carried by the rod, a sleeve secured to said rod and provided with longitudinally extended slots, a plate slidably mounted on said rods and having its corners projected through said slots and beyond the outside of said sleeve, means adjustably mounted on said sleeve, tongues integrally formed with sai d plate and arranged at the corners thereof and cooperatingwith said adjustable means, and a guide washer secured to said adjustable means for retaining said tongues in engagement with said adjustable means. 4
2. A pipe wrench including a rod, jaws pivotally mounted on said rod at one end thereof, a sleeve secured to and surrounding said rod, said sleeve provided with longitudinal slots, means slidably mounted upon the rod and extending through said slots, connecting rods having their ends connected to said means and to said jaws, and a nut screw threadedly mounted upon said sleeve and cooperating with said means for longitudinally moving said means on said rod.
3. A pipe wrench including a rod, laterally disposed ears formed at the terminal of the rod, jaws pivotally mounted in said cars, a sleeve secured to said rod and surrounding said rod, a nut adjustably mounted 011 said sleeve, said nut being provided with an annular recess, a plate slidably mounted on said rod, and means superimposed upon said plate and disposed within said annular recess for establishing a connection between said nut and said plate, and rods connecting said plate with said jaws.
4. A pipe wrench including a rod, jaws mounted upon said rod, a cylindrical sleeve secured to said rod, said sleeve being of a diameter considerably greater than the diameter of said rod whereby the inside of said sleeve will be spaced away from said rod, a parallelogram-shaped plate slidably mounted upon said sleeve, an adjusting nut arranged for longitudinal adjustment on said sleeve and provided with an annular recess on its under side, tongues carried by the said plate and extended into the recess in said nut said tongues'being bent at right angles to provide shelves, and a washer divided into complementary halves and se cured to said nut on its under side whereby the .aid shelves will contact with said washer for retaining said plate in engagement with said nut.
5. A pipe wrench including a rod, jaws mountedupon said rod, a cylindrical sleeve secured to said rod, said sleeve provided with exterior screw threads and oppositely disposed longitudinally extending slots, a parallelogram-shaped plate slidably mounted upon said rod, tongues carried by the ends of said plate, an adjusting nut arranged for longitudinal adjustment on said sleeve and provided with an annular recess for the reception of said tongues, means for retaining said tongues within said recess, and means connecting said plate with said jaws.
