To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT G. KorAoKr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in MonkeyJ Vrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inventioinsuch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in monkey wrenches, and its object is to provide a wrench having a movable jaw and a handle, the length of which handle be altered at will irrespective of the adjustment of the movable jaw; to provide simple and convenient means for adjusting the movable jaw, and to provide the device with various novel features of construction and arrangement as hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a wrench made in accordance with this invention, and shown partially in section; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; and Figs. 3, 4, and 5, are respectively transverse sections on the lines 33, H and 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
The fixed part of the handle is a bar composed of two members 1 spaced apart and joined at one end by the stationary jaw 2. The movable jaw 3 is slidably mounted on the bars 1, and is provided with oppositely arranged segment nuts 4, preferably formed integral therewith which project into the space between the bars. The adjusting screw 5 is located between the bars 1, and is engaged by the segment nuts 4 on the movable jaw, and the screw is journaled at one end in the stationary jaw 2.
The ends of the bars 1 opposite the jaw 2 are threaded for a portion of their length,
each bar substantially forming a segment of a bolt upon which the internally threaded handle 6 is adapted to be screwed, and by adjusting it on to the bars its length or dis tance from the jaws may be altered.
The end of the adjusting screw 5, which is between the threaded ends of the bars 1, is tubular and provided with longitudinal slots 7. A rod 8 is journaled in the closed outer end of the handle 6 and extends axially through the handle and into the tubular portion of the adjusting screw 5 where it is provided with a transverse pin 9 adapted to traverse the slots 7, and its outer end projects through the end of the handle and is provided with a knob 10 by which it may be manually rotated. This rod is for the purpose of manually rotating the adjusting screw 5 to adjust the position of the movable jaw 8. The connection of this rod with the adjusting screw as described, permits the rod to be moved longitudinally when the handle is longitudinally adjusted, the pin 9 traversing the slot 7.
A wrench made in accordance with this invention is desirable because the length of the handle may be readily adjusted to conform to the conditions under which it is to be used. The handle may be lengthened when a long leverage is desired and shortened when the space in which the handle may swing is small. The adjustment of the handle length does not in any way interfere with the relative position of the jaws 2 and 3, and it may be adjusted after the jaws are clamped upon a bolt head or nut as well as before. Furthermore, the means for adjusting the movable jaw 3 is brought to the extreme end of the handle which is convenient in cases where the object to be gripped between the jaws is in a somewhat inaccessible place. The wrench may be inserted with only the end of the handle accessible, and the jaws adjusted with the wrench in this position. The device is also simple and substantial in construction and may be made and sold at a reasonable price.
What I claim is 1. A monkey wrench comprising a bar, a jaw fixed on one end of the bar, a handle longitudinally adjustable on the other end of the bar, a jaw slidable on the bar and having a threaded opening, a screw in the bar rotatively connected to the fixed jaw and extending through the opening in the slidable aw and a rod rotatively connected to the handle at one end and slidably connected to the screw at the other end to rotate the screw.
2. A monkey wrench, comprising a bar having a jaw fixed thereon, a jaw movable on the bar and having a screw threaded opening, a screw extending through said opening and rotatably connected to the bar, a handle longitudinally adjustable on the bar, and means carried by the handle con nected with said adjusting screw for manually rotating the same.
3. A monkey wrench, comprlsing a fixed jaw, a bifurcated bar, a movable jaw on said bar having opposing segment nuts extending into the space between the members of the-bar, an adjusting screw between the members of the bar and journaled in the fixed jaw and also engaged by the segment nuts on the movable jaw, a handle longitudinally adjustable on said bar, a rod j ournaled in the axis of the handle and slidably connected to said adjusting screw, and a knob on the outer end of the rod.

rod in axial alinement with the adjusting screw and journaled in the axis of the handle, the'inner eni id rod extending into the tubular portion of the adjusting screw, a pin projecting from said rod into the longitudinal slot in the adjusting screw, and a knob on the outer end of said rod.
5. A monkey wrench,comprising a bifurcated bar having a fixed jaw at one end, a jawmovable on said bar and having opposing segment nuts extending between the members of the bar, an adjusting screw journaled between the said members and en gaged by the segment nuts on the movable jaw, one end of said screw being tubular and provided with a longitudinal slot, screw threads on the other end of the bar, an internally screw threaded handle adapted to receive the threaded end of the bar, a rod journaledin the axis of the handle and projecting through the closed end of the same,
the inner end of said shaft also extending into the tubular portion of the adjusting screw, a transverse pin projecting from the rod and traversing the longitudinal slot in the adjusting screw, and a knob on the outer end of the rod.
