Description

G. R. PRATT.
DRINKING FOUNTAIN.
APPLICATION FILED JAN-25.1915
1 1 98,055.. Patented Aug. '1', 1916.
GEORGE R. PRATT, OF VENTURA, CALIFORNIA.
DRINKING-FOUNTAIN.
Application filed January 25, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. PRATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ventura, in the county of Ventura, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking-Fountains; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertams to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in drinking fountains, and particularly to the type known as sanitary fountains.
One object of the invention is to provide a novel and efficient device of this character from which a number of persons of different heights can drink simultaneously.
Another object is to provide a fountain having a plurality of drinking nozzles of such construction that said nozzles cannot be brought into contact with the mouth, thus preventing the spread of disease.
Other objects and advantages of the mvention will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fountain made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View in the line H of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical sectional detail through one of the drinking nozzles, and Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view of a modification of the device.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a large pipe which receives water from a suitable source and having mounted on the upperend thereof a globe 11. The globe communicates with the pipe and receives water therefrom. In the upper end of the globe is a coil pipe 12 in the inner end of which is a valve 13 adapted to be pushed upon against its seat by a pivoted float 14 mounted within the globe. Within the pipe 10 is a smaller pipe 15, this pipe extending up into the globe where it is provided with a plurality of downwardly and outwardly extending Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 4,354.
branches 16 for receiving water from the globe as will be understood. Connected to the pipe 15 at different heights are the laterally extending branch pipes 17 to the outer ends of which are secured the disks 18 which are provided centrally with the nipples 19 through which water issues from the pipe. Also carried by the disks are the outwardly directed pointed members or pins 20 which are adapted to prevent the user from placing his mouth directly against the nozzle. In each of the pipes 17 is a valve 21 controlled by a hand lever 22. This arrangement of the pipes 10 and 15 cools the water in the inner pipe 15 in the warmer weather when the water flows up the pipe 10 through the globe, thus delivering water from the nozzle in a better condition than ordinary.
When a person desires to obtain a drink of water'the nozzle of the proper height is selected and the mouth placed in position in front of the opening. The proper hand lever 18 is then operated to open the valve 10 whereupon water will issue from the opening directly into the mouth of the drinker. By reason of the projecting pins 15, the mouth must be held a distance away from the pipe and in so doing contamination of the pipe is prevented.
Referring particularly to Fig. 6 there is shown a modification of the device which includes a large pipe 23 divided vertically into three longitudinal compartments by the partitions 24 receiving water from the globe in the same manner as the pipe 15. Extending outwardly from each of the compartments are pipes 25 which are equipped with nozzles like those of the first form, and each of these pipes 25 has a valve similar to those first described. As these nozzles and valves are identical with the first ones it is not thought necessary to illustrate them.
If desired, the globe 11 may be made much smaller, and the shape of same varied without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claim.
WVhat is claimed is:
A drinking fountain comprising a supply pipe, a globe connected to the upper end of the pipe, a second pipe mounted in said pipe, and having its upper end extended into the globe for reeeiving Water therefrom, the sec- In testimony whereof, I afiix my signa- 0nd pipe having its lower end closed for ture, in the presence of two Witnesses. trapping the-Water therein, branch plpes extending through thefirst pipe and having GEORGE PRAT'L l 5' their inner ends connected to the second WVitnesses:
