To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN P. FARLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Drinking Fountains, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sanitary drinking fountains and more especially to fountains of that class in which a lever is manipulated to permit water to rise sufficiently from the mouth piece to enable one to drink without touching his lips to the fountain, and in which a spring is employed to effect the shutting off of the water when the lever is released.
My object is to produce a fountain of the character outlined in which the water cannot freeze at any inaccessible point in the fountain and from which ice clogging an accessible point can be easily and quickly dislodged.
Another object is to produce a fountain equipped with a drinking trough for dogs and the like and making provision for charging and automatically replenishing the trough with waste water from the mouthpiece and for draining the overcharge of water from the trough.
A. further object is to provide a fountain having a standpipe for supplying the mouthpiece with water and means for draining said pipe immediately after the operating lever is released.
' l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims, and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of a drinking fountain embodying my invention.

Fig. 3, is a central verticalsection of the lower end of the fountain.
In the said drawing, a vertical pipe comprises a series of pipe sections 1 connected together by a pair of T- couplings 2 and 3, the former being located two or three feet below the surface of the ground and the coupling 3 a few inches above the ground, and the coupling 2 is provided with a drain pipe 4 leading to the sewer, not shown.
5 is a casing having an enlarged upper end 6 screwed onto the lower end of the endmost section of said pipe, the bore of the casing below the enlarged upper end being of uniform diameter and circular in cross section. At one side the casing is provided with an intake opening 7 in com? munication with a nipple 8 connected to a water supply pipe 9, and above opening 7 is a second opening 10 communicating with the bore of the casing and with a passage 11 offset from and communicating with the nipple.
The casing is also provided in a plane below that occupied by nipple 8 with a laterally projecting nipple 12 communicating with a down-turned elbow 13 from which a drain pipe 14: extends downward, and said drain-pipe as it discharges but a small quantity of water at a time, is preferably not connected to the sewer.
15 is an upper casing secured to the upper end of the topmost pipe section 1, and upon a casing 16 inclosing the pipe section to a point just above the coupling 3. At the lower end of casing 16 is a casing 17 having a tubular offset 18 to which is secured in any suitable manner, a trough 19, and a pipe 20 leads from the coupling 3 through said offset into said trough for charging the latter with water accessible to a.dog or other small animal. The casing 17 is secured in any suitable manner to a base 21, which rests upon the ground and provides a finish and a brace against lateral movement of the fountain.
Secured upon the upper end of the upper casing 15, is a catch basin or bowl 22, and secured on the bottom of said catch basin or bowl by the means of screws which fasten the bowl, is a perforated ring 23 having a central opening 24 for a purpose which hereinafter appears.
The casing is provided at one side with a vertical slot or opening 25 flanked at each side by ears 26, equipped with a pivot bolt 27, and extending through said opening and pivoted to said cars is a lever 28 provided with a toothed segment 29 within the casing 15, said segment being enmeshed with a rack bar 30 formed on the side of a short vertical pipe 31, and said pipe normally rests on a perforated cap plate 32 fitting on the upper end of the topmost pipe section 1.
A stand pipe 33 extends slidingly through the perforated cap plate and is screwed into the short pipe 31, and to hold said stand pipe yieldingly depressed and with the short pipe 31 bearing on the cap plate and-the latter on said pipe section 1, a'spring 34 surrounds the stand pipe and bears at its upper end against said cap plate and at its lower end on a collar 35fitting on said stand normal position.

' The stand pipe in the plane of the lower side of the trough supply pipe 20, is provided with a collar 37 prevented from upward or downward movement on the pipe by cross pins 38 extending through the pipe. This collar 37 acts to check water flowing down through the pipe 1 around the stand pipe 33 sufiiciently to deflect some of such Water laterally through the pipe 20 into the trough, but when the water rises in the trough to the top of pipe 20, it offers sufficient resistance to outward flow of water through pipe 20, to guard against the overflowing of the trough and thus compels any additional water to pass downward around the deflecting collar 37 to the enlarged or upper end of casing 5, and when the water rises fromsaid enlarged end of the casing to the level of the drain pipe 4, it flows out through said drain pipe, provision being made to prevent the water passing downward through the bore of easing 5, as hereinafter explained, and in this connection attention is directed to the fact that as the drain pipe 4 is buried in the ground below the frost line, water which may stand in the enlarged end of the casing 5 and lower portion of'pipe 1 and coupling 2, cannot freeze;
39 is a short vertical pipe of small'dia1neter arranged'centrally in casing 5 and provided with an enlarged upper end 40 secured to the lower end of pipe 33 and secured to and depending from pipe 39 is a cap 41 provided with lateral perforations 42. An upwardly facing cup washer 43 constitutes a water-tight partition between the perforated cap 41 and the wall of casing 5 and is secured'rigidly to the lower end of said cap by a clamping plate 44 and a screw bolt 45, it being noted that the cup washer is: of considerabl larger diameter than the cap so that water passing from the stand pipe through pipe 39 into the cap may readily escape through the perforations 42 and thence pass through the tubular nipple 12 and elbow 13 whenthe parts occupy their Fitting" upon pipe 39 above the cap41 is a sleeve46, and clamped between said cap and: sl.eeve;. around. the V pipe 39.. is an .up-
wardly facing cup washer 47, the same normally closing the opening 7 connected to the supply nipple 8. Fit-ting around the pipe 39 and clamped between the sleeve 46 and the enlarged upper end of pipe 39 is an inverted or downwardly facing cup washer 48 located above the plane of opening 10 so that water from the supply pipe may normally stand under pressure within the casing around the sleeve 46 and maintain the cup washers 47 and 48 expanded and therefore in watertight relation with the bore of easing 5, so that water cannot pass upward from the supply pipe into the pipe 1. The cup washer 48 constitutes merely a water-tight partition, and the cup-washers 43 and 47 constitute a piston valve which in its normal or closed position, as shown, prevents water from the supply pipe entering, the standpipe, and which when open, as hereinafter appears, permits water to enter the stand pipe but prevents it from escaping through the nipple 12. l
Within casing 15 is a valve casing 49 secured at itslower end to the upper end of the short pipe 31, the lower end of the passage of said valve casing being angular as at 50 for a purpose which hereinafter appears- The upper end of the valve casing is screwed into the lower end of a vertical mouth-piece tube 51, provided at its upper end with ,a dished perforated cap 52, from which the water bubbles upward when the fountain is in operation, so as to be accessible to a person desiring a drink, and the mouth-piece tube fits-slidingly in the opening 24 of the perforated plate 23. The upper end of the valve casing 49 constitutes a valve seat 53 for a valve 54. The stem 55 of the valve extends down through the valve casing 49, and screwed thereon is a nut 56 incapable of rotation within the angular bore or passage 50 but capable of sliding upward and downward therein, and fitting around the valvestem and bearing at its upper end against the valve casing and at its lower end on said nut, is a spring 57 for holding the valve 54 seated with a pressure somewhat less than the pressure of the water in the-supply pipe, so that when the lever 28 is pressed downward to raise the stand-pipe and thereby open the'piston valve at the lower end of said stand pipe,
through the perforations L2 and rise through the stand-pipe to eflect the unseating of the valve 54 as explained. In this operation, the resistance of spring 34 is overcome so that said spring being placed under tension shall immediately eifect the re-lowering of the stand-pipe and the reelevation of the lever, when the overcoming pressure upon the latter is relaxed. Water overflowing from the mouthpiece cascades or flows down into the catch basin or bowl 24 and passes through the perforated plate 23 into the casing 15 and from the latter through the perforated cap plate 32 into pipe 1. As it passes down through said pipe it is checked sufiioiently by deflecting collar 37 to charge the trough as hereinbefore explained and the excess water continues to the bottom of the pipe 1 and all of it except that standin below the plane of drain pipe 4 passes of? through the latter to the sewer, as hereinbefore explained, it being noted that the pressure of water against the underside of cup washer 4:8 guards against any chance of such water passing up through pipe 1, and of course the water standing in pipe 1 from escaping from the latter except by way of drain pipe 4.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a sanitary drinking fountain which embodies the features of advantage enumerated in the state ment of the object of the invention and which obviously may be modified in minor particulars without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A sanitary drinking fountain, comprising a pipe having a laterally projecting drain pipe and a laterally proj eoting trough supply pipe, the latter at a higher point than the former, a trough communicating with the trough supply pipeand arranged with its upper edge above said pipe, a catch basin communicating with the upper and a casing communicating with the lower end of the first-named pipe, the casing having a water supply opening and a drain opening at diiferent heights, an endwise movable stand pipe within the first-named pipe, a piston valve movable with said stand pipe and provided with a passage communicating with the stand pipe and with an opening for the ingress and egress of water to and from said passage and stand pipe, said valve normally closing the said water supply opening of said casing and uncovering the drain opening thereof, means closing communication between the first-named pipe and said casing at a point above the water supply pipe opening of the latter, a mouth piece for the stand pipe from which water shall overflow into said catch basin, means to move the stand pipe until the said valve uncovers the water supply opening and covers the drain opening of said casing and means for deflecting water flowing down through the first-named pipe around the stand pipe, through said trough supply pipe until the trough is fully charged.
2. A sanitary drinking fountain, comprising a pipe having a laterally projecting drain pipe and a laterally projecting trough supply pipe, the latter at a higher point than the former, a trough communicating with the trough supply pipe and arranged with its upper edge above said pipe, a catch basin communicating with the upper end and a casing communicating with the lower end of the first-named pipe, the casing having a water supply opening and a drain opening at different heights, an endwise movable stand pipe within the first-named pipe, a piston valve movable with said stand pipe and provided with a passage communicating with the stand pipe and with an opening for the ingress and egress of water to and from said passage and stand pipe, said valve normally closing the said water sup ply opening of said casing and uncovering the drain opening thereof, means closing communication between the first-named pipe and said casing at a point above the water supply pipe opening of the latter, a mouthpiece for the stand pipe from which water shall overflow into said catch basin, and a plate surrounding and movable with the stand pipe and adapted for deflecting water flowing down the first-named pipe around the stand pipe, into said trough through the said trough supply pipe.
