MACHINE roRsPLrrTINe LEATHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedMay 9, 1916.
Application filed May 15, 1914. Serial N 0. 838,742.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM DANNEN- BERG, a subject of theEmperor of Germany, residing at Elmore, in the county of F aribault and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and ,useful Improvements in Machines for Splitting Leather, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in machines for splitting leather and its object is to produce a machine comprising a table upon which a knife is mounted for horizontal movement from one end of the table to the other, the knife being retained in engagement with the work by a pair of sliding guide arms operated in bearings disposed upon the sides of the table.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig.2. Fig. 41 is a section taken on line H of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a front elevation.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The reference numeral 1 designates the table adapted to receive the work and said table is supported upon beams 2, 2 carried by the legs 3, 3, and to one end of said table an angular bearing 4 is secured that carries the driving screw 5 provided with the operating handle 6.
7 designates the head of the knife frame which is threaded for movement over the driving screw 5 and the sides 8, 8 of said frame extend through bearings, 9, 9, carried upon the beams 2, 2 at the sides of the table,
for engagement with the knife 10. The relatively inner terminations 9 of the bearings 9, 9 are spaced away from the table 1 and serve as a guide for the knife 10 as it is drawn over said table by the movement of the frame 7, 8, 8 with relation to said table.
At the end of the machine remote from the driving screw a screw shaft 1.1 is disshaft tapered wedges 13, 13 are disposed for engagement with brackets 11, formed with elongated openings 15 into which said wedges are projected and said brackets, fur ther, engage and carry a clamping jaw 16 which, by means of said brackets and bracket-supports, may be moved away from orinto engagement with the end of the table 1.
The end of the piece of leather to be cut or split is placed between the jaw 16 and the adjacent end of the table 1 and the screw shaft 11 rotated in a direction to cause said jaw to wedge the leather against the table end, the leather being disposed upon the table 1 and extending to and over a roller 17 disposed in the apertured portion 18 of said table, the end of said leather being engaged by a movable clamp 19 comprising parallel jaws adjustably connected by hand screws 19 carried by threaded shafts 20 providedwith hand wheels 21 by which they are rotated to move the said clamp longitudi- I nally of the shafts 20 and draw the leather taut. By now rotating the driving screw in a direction to drive the frame head 7 thereover, in a direction away from the table 1, the knife 10 will be drawn into engag ment with the leather and caused to split the same. i
What is claimed is j 1. In a leather splitting machine, a table, a driving screw, a support therefor carried by said table, a knife frame disposed above said table and operable by said driving screw, a knife carried by said knife frame and operable over said table and a clamping jaw operatively associated with one end of said table.
2. In a leather splitting machine, a table adapted to receive the fabric, a driving screw, a support therefor carried by said table, a knife frame disposed above said table and operable by said driving screw, a knife carried by said knife frame and operable over said table, a clamping jaw operatively associated with one end of said table for clamping.one end of the fabric thereagainst and means suitably supported beneath said table for engagement with the other end of said fabric whereby the same may be drawn taut.
3. In a leather splitting machine, an apertured table adapted to receive the fabric, a driving screw, a support therefor carried by said table, a knife frame operable by said driving screw, a knife carried by said knife frame and operable over said table, a clamping j aw operatively associated with one end of said table for clamping one end of the fabric thereagainst, a guide roller for the fabric journaled in the apertured portion of said table, a clamp beneath said table adapted for engagement with theother end of the fabric and manually operable means carried by the table supports and in engagement with said clamp for moving the same with relation to the table. 7
4. In aleather splitting machine, a table, a driving screw, a support therefor carried by said table, a knife frame operable by Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Ya'tents,
