SHEARING-MACHINE.
To all whom may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HENRI LU- THER, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Petershill Road, Glasgow, Scotland, manufacturer, have invented a new and useful Shearing-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in and relating to machines for treating sheet metal plates and the like, and essentially consists in constructing and arranging the parts of a machine that will automatically shear or trim simultaneously both edges of a metal sheet, although it can be adapted to trim only one of such edges; and can also be applied for cutting the sheets, or for beading, molding, or similarly treating either or both ec ges of the metal sheet, and which will be more accurate and efficient in action and effect an economy in cost of treating the material not hitherto obtained.
In order that others skilled in the art to which my invention relates may be able to properly understand same I have hereunto appended two sheets of explanatory drawings in which Figures 1, 2 and 3 end elevation, a side elevation at right angles thereto and a plan view of a machine, as constructed according to my improvements, for treating sheet metal plates and the like.
Referring to these drawings :-According to my improvements a sheet plate of iron, steel, or the like, or a series of such sheet plates is or are placed over a pair of parallel guiding rails a, and this sheet or sheets is or are held down in horizontal position on the rails a by the action of an electro-magnet, or preferably and as shown a series of electro-magnets located longitudinally under and along the center of the sheet, but which may be placed near the edge or other parts of the sheet to keep same in position. Two parallel girders c of any suitable cross section are arranged on a suitable bed plate cl at spaceddistances apart, and either or both girders are by screw, rack or other gear 6 made adjustable toward each other to suit the sizes of the plates to be treated.

preferably consisting each of a pair of edge cutting revolving rolls g, 9 and these frames 7 receive a reciprocating or traveling motion through rack and pinion or equivalent gear 1', while the rolls simultaneously receive a rotating motion through wheel or other gearing j driven from an electro-motor or other prime moving force, so that the plate held in horizontal position by the electro-magnets b has its edges sheared or trimmed off to the desired degree.
The operation of the machine is as fol lows r-A sheet-metal plate is placed in position on the rails a and is securely held there by the electromagnets Z). The traveling frames f are in the position shown by Fig. 3 and are traveled to the other end of the machine by the rack and pinion gearing i as the tools g, 9 are rotated by the gearing j so that the edges of the sheet are trimmed. When the frames f reach the end of their travel the motion is reversed so that they travel backward to be ready to trim the next sheet. "While the frames f are traveling backward the electromagnets b are demagnetized and so disconnected from the sheet which is pulled out of the machine along the rails a by hand from the end A and a new sheet is inserted from the end B. Instead of pulling the trimmed sheet out of the machine by hand this operation may be accomplished automatically by fitting hooks or dogs is to brackets Z secured to frames f. While the frames 7 are traveling forward the points of the hooks 70 travel along the top of the sheet being trimmed and on reaching the end of the sheet they will fall over so that when the frames f are traveled backward they will pull the sheet out of the machine at the end A. In the case of copper, zinc, or other non-magnetic substances, these sheets may be held down on their supporting rails by an iron or steel sheet or plate on which the electro-magnets would act.
Instead of revolving cutters other tools with suitable gearing may be substituted on the traveling frames for giving a beaded, molded, or like action to the edges of the sheet metal plates. If desired the electromotor can be started and stopped by a controller which may be operated by push-buttons located at chine.

1. The combination in a machine for operating simultaneously on the two edges of a sheet, of a bed plate; two elongated structures thereon; means for adjusting said structures toward and from each other; housings respectively mounted on said structures; means for simultaneously moving said housings on the structures parallel to each other; a tool carried by each of the housings; and fixed means for holding the sheet stationary while said housings with their tools move along its opposite sides and operate thereon.
2. The combination in a machine for oper ating simultaneously on the two edges of a sheet of a bed plate; two elongated structures thereon means for adjusting said structures toward and from each other; housings respectively mounted on said structures; means for simultaneously moving said housings on the structures parallel to each other; a tool carried by each of the housings; means for simultaneously driving said tools from the same source of power; and a series of fixed electro-magnets for holding the sheet stationary while the housings with their tools are moved to operate thereon.
3. The combination in a machine for operating simultaneously on the two edges of a sheet of a bed plate; two elongated structures thereon; means for adjusting said structures toward and from each other; housings respectively mounted on said structures; means for simultaneously moving said housings on the structures in lines parallel to each other; a tool carried by each of the housings; an elongated, stationary sheetsupporting rail mounted on each of the supporting structures and extending in position to assist in carrying the sheet operated on by the tools; and means for holding the sheet stationary on said rails while the housings and their tools are moved to operate thereon.

The combination in a machine for operating simultaneously on the two edges of a sheet of a bed plate; two elongated structures thereon; means for adjusting said structures toward and from each other; housings respectively mounted on said struc tures; means for simultaneously moving said housings on the structures parallel to each other; a tool carried by each of the housings; a sheet-supporting rail mounted on each of the supporting structures and extending in position to assist in carrying the sheet; means for holding the sheet stationary while it is being operated on by the tools; with a sheet-engaging device on each of the housings for moving the said sheet after it has been operated on.
