Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 25, 1916.
Application filed January 22, 1916. Serial No. 73,625.
To all whom t may concern."
Be it known that we, JULIUs POLL and RAE POLL, citizens of the United States, and residents of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironingoards, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to the ironing of garments, linen, and the like, and the main object thereof is to provide an ironing board the outer 'end of which is entirely free in order that shirts, skirts, and the like may be arranged thereon without the necessity for raising the board.
Another object of the invention is to provide an ironing board of the indicated class, that may be adjusted to suit the height of the person using the board, and to provide for firmly securing the board to a window sill or available piece of household furniture.
A further object is to provide a shear leg for the board which acts as a clamp for holding the board to a table or the like, and a further object is to provide a table which is vertically adjustable to accommodate the same to the height at which the board is to be used. And still further objects are to provide such devices which are simple in construction and use, highly practical, and comparatively inexpensive.
Our invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which like characters refer to like parts in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention ready for use; Fig. 2 is a detached view of a ller block two of which are shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section taken through the center of the invention when ready for use; Fig. 4; is a view similar to Fig. 3, though of only the ironing board and that in collapsed or inoperative position; and Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the ironing board alone in collapsed condition.
Referring to the drawings, 6 represents a table carried by vertical bars 7 adjustable in the end members of a stand 8, a rod 9 being used in any of a plurality of perforations in the bars 7 whereby the table 6 may be vertically adjusted, and we prefer to provide an asbestos covering for the table 6 in order to permit the placing of hot irons thereon.
At 10 is shown the ironing board, of conventional or any desired shape, the inner end of which is cut out to form a slot 11 to permit the passage of a shear leg 12 pivoted to depending side plates 13 secured to the board 10, as shown at 14C, suitable brace members 15 being provided on the under side of the board, and it will be noted that the upper inner end of the shear leg 12 is transversely grooved as shown at 16 in order to form a clamping jaw 17 for engage ment with the table 6.
At 18 are shown two filler blocks for insertion between the board 10 and the under side of the table 6, these being preferably stepped as shown to meet varying conditions, and the inner upper end of the shear leg 12 may be formed to provide a horizontal surface 19 for the reception of articles used during the operation of ironing.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the outer end of the board 10 is entirely free, no obstructions presenting themselves to prevent passing a skirt, shirt, or similarly formed garment or other article overthe board, or in other words to prevent passing the outer end of the board 10 through the article.
llhile we have shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, we do not limit ourselves thereto but may make changes thereover, provided that such changes do not depart from the spirit of the invention and come within the scope of the appended claim.
While the device is preferably combined with the vertically adjustable table illustrated, this is not obligatory as the board and the shear leg may be clamped to the edge of any table, or to a window sill, or to other articles of furniture or portions of a building.
Having fully described the invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device of the class described, comprising a board having a slot at one end, a shear leg in pivotal connection with said board' names to this specification in the presence and projected thereover through said slot, of two subscribingwitnesses.-4
said shear leg presentingv a clamping jaw above the slotted end of said board to clamp LL' the edge of a table between itself and said Y Y board, and stepped filler blocks interposed Witnesses: between the board and the table so engaged... CHARLOTTE D. WHITE,
In testimony whereof we have signed our n LOUIS MILLER.
