To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, YOUNG R. ANDn-nson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olney, in the county of Young and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid-Beds, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation to an attachment for beds for invalids by means of which the invalid may be raised to and maintained in a sitting posture when required and in such connection it relates more particularly to the construction and arrangement of such an attachment whereby when not in use it may be folded back and down upon the bed to form a portion of the support for the invalid when reclining.

The principal objects of my invention, are first to provide an attachment for an invalids bed which is of simple construction and readily attachable to or detachable from the ordinary metal bedstead and which when so attached may be readily adjusted to support the patient or invalid in successive positions varying from the substantially horizontal or reclining position to the vertical or sitting position and second to provide in such an attachment a means whereby the seat thus formed may be utilized as a commode or as a support for a table.

The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming part hereof and which is a perspective view of a bed provided with the attachment enibodying main features of my invention.

Referring to the drawings 1, 1 are the metallic or other side rails of a bedstead which rails are detachably supported by the head and foot board 2 and 3 respectively. The side rails 1 are reinforced by the transverse metallic or wooden slats 4 which also serve to support a mattress not shown.

Intermediate of the ends of each rail is detachably and pivotally secured to each rail 1 an arm 5, the pivot connection 6 for which is preferably a bolt as illustrated. The tops of the two arms 5 are connected by a. cross rod 7 to thus form a frame work supporting a canvass or other suitable covering 8, the coveringS being preferably doubled and sewed, as at 9, to inclose the rod 7 and the side arms 5, The covering 8 does not extend along the arms 5 to the pivots G but stops some distance above said pivots. Immediately below the lower edge of covering 8 a bracket arm 10 is pivotally secured as at 11 to each arm 5 so that the arms 10 may be folded back upon the covering substantially parallel with arms 5 or may be extended from the arms 5 to substantially right angled relationship with said covering and arms-the bracket arms 10 projecting toward the foot of the bed.

In one form of the attachment designed for use as a commode, two transverse rods 12 connect the two bracket arms 10 to form a slide and a support for the commode seat- 13. This seat 13 may slide back'and forth on the rods 12 toward or away from either of the bracket arms 10 and the under face of the seat 13 is formed with channels or grooves 14 into which the flanged top of a proper receptacle (not shown) may be slid or from which the flange of said receptacle may be readily removed without disturbing the seat.

The two transverse rods 12 have bent portions 15 at one end and removable cotter pins 16 at the other end to form a means whereby the rods 12 may be removed when the seat 13 is to be removed and another attachment such for instance a table (indicated in dotted lines) may be readily secured to or detached from the bracket arms 10. The angular relationship of the frame arms 5 to the bed mattress may be varied and the cover and frame supported at the proper angle by means of the rods 17 pivoted to the back of the frame and having free ends engaging notched, serrated or indented bars 18 detachably secured to the inner face of the side rails 1 of the bed. When not in use the attachment may be removed by removing the bolts 6 and folding up the bracket arms 10 and supporting rods 17. The bracket arms 10 are maintained in operative position in the support of the seat 13 or auxiliary parts by resting upon the inturned lugs 19 formed preferably in tegral with the frame arms 10.

An attachment for an invalids bed, comprising two frame arms each pivotally and detachably connected at one end to a side rail of the bed, cross rod connecting the other end of each frame arm, a covering inclosing the cross rod and a portion of each frame arm to constitute a support, two bracket arms each pivotally connected at one end to a frame arm, an inturned lug formed on each frame arm and adapted to support a bracket arm when said arm is in lowered position, combined with means for supporting the attachment in required angular relationship with the mattress of the bed, said means supported by the frame of name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
