To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK FRANKLIN FIELD, a citizen of the United` States, resid ing at Highland Beach Station, in the county of Kent and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flushing-Valves, ci which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to an improvement in valves and more particularly to an improvement in flushing valves for water closet tanks.
In the use of water closet tanks, it is desirable to use all the water in the tank for each flushing operation of the valve. If any appreciable amount of water is held back in the tank, usually by the valve closing too quickly, there is an inadequate iushing action ot the water through the bowl and insanitary conditions are set up in the bowl. For this and other reasons it is extremely desirable to hold the valve open until all oi thewater has left the tank.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of flushing valves for water closet tanks, whereby, when the valve is operated tov open the same the valve is held in its extreme open position by means acted upon by the water owing down through the outlet chamber in the valve, until the required flushing operation 'of the bowl is completed or all of the water has left the tank, when the valve will automatically close.
Another obj ect of my invention is to provide such a device in flushing valves with means for adjusting the open position of the valve, whereby the movable member of the valve when opened may beheld in a more or less open position, as required.
My invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of a flushing valve for water closet tanks, said valve having details of construction as will be more fully set forth hereinafter and claimed.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a water closet flushing valve embodying my invention and showing the valve in the closed position. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view similar to Fig. 1 through the valve and showing the valve in the open position. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the valve taken on line 3, 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional view through the valve taken on line 4, 4; of Fig. l.
In the drawing o indicates a portion of the bottom of a water closet tank, 6 the fixed member of the valve which is secured in position through an opening to the bottom of the tank in the usual way, 7 the movable member otl the valve and S a portion of the usual lever .tor opening the valve, usually attached to the movable member 7 by a chain 9.
The relatively xed member 6 of the valve has the usual valve seat 10 and outlet chamber 11. This member 6 is also provided with internal radial arms 12. 12 which supports a short central internally screwthreaded sleeve 18 in a vertical position. An externally screw-threaded tube 1-1 is screw-threaded through the sleeve 13 and has below the sleeve 13 oppositely disposed slots 15. 15. On each side of the slots are formed ears 16. 16. Two oppositely disposed thin flat wings 17. 17, shaped to loosely fit in the outlet chamber 11, when in the raised or normal position, are each pivotally secured to the ears 16. 16 by a transverse pin 18 through a central iinger 19, which enters a slot 15. These lingers 19, 19 form a part of and are bent at right angles to the wings 17. 17, and extend through the slots 15. 15 into the tube 14 a predetermined distance, when the wings are in the closed or downward position. The movable member 7 of the valve is shaped to fit over the valve seat 6 when in the closed position and close the valve. This member 7 has a central valve stem 20 of a predetermined length and which has a sliding iit in the tube llt, and the usual overflow pipe 21 connected tothe lever 8 by the chain 9. The valve stemV 2O is secured at its upper end to the movable member 7 of the valve as shown, or in any well known way. When the valve is closed the wings 17. 17 are in an open horizontal position as shown in Fig. 1 and when the valve is open the wings 17. 17 are in a closed vertical position, as shown in Fig. 2.
In the operation of my improved flushing valve in flushing out a water closet bowl with water, the valve is opened by raising.` the movable valve member 7 usually by pulling down on a chain, not shown, which is attached to the outer end of the lever 8. As the member 7 is raised to open the valve the water in the tank simultaneously rushes downward through the outlet chamber 11 against the Wings 17 17 which are held in a horizontal or crosswise position in the chamber 11 by the valve stem 20 acting on the fingers 19. 19 on the Wings 17 17 as shown in Fig. 1. lVhen the valve is in the open position the Weight and force of' the Water forces the Wings 17. 17 downward into a vertical or lengthwise position in the chamber 11 and the fingers 19. 19 entering the tube 14 under the end of the valve stem 20 engages vith the end of' the valve stem and holds the movable member 7 of the valve in the open position. As the weight and force of the Water acting on the wings is greatly in excess` of the Weight of the valve member 7, the member 7 of the valve is noiv held or locked in the open position until practically all or asuiiicient amount of Water has flowed through the valve to adequately fiush out the bowl. lVhen the last of' the Water passes through the chamber 11 and by the Wings 17. 17 the Weight of' the valve member 7 is suflicient to overcome the Weight of' the Wings 17. 17, when the member 7 Will drop down by gravity and close the valve and the valve stem 20 acting on the fingers 19. 19 raises the wings 17. 17 into their normal open position. vrlhe opening of the valve may be regulated by turning the tube 1&1 in the sleeve 13 thereby varying the open position of the valve member 7 relative to the valve seat 10 and thus regulating the flow of' Water through the valve. It is evident that the number of Wings 17. 17 could be varied and other details of construction could be changed Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. A iiushing valve comprising a relatively fixed valve member and a movable valve member adapted to open and close thepassage through the valve seat, the relatively fixed valve member having a valve seat, an outlet chamber below the valve seat,
a central sleeve in the outlet chamber, a
tube in the central sleeve, a Wing pivotally secured to the tube Vand having a finger which enters the tube through a slot in the tube, and the movable valve member having a valve stem in the tube, for the purpose as described. y
2. A fiushing valve comprising a relatively fixed valve member and a movable valve member adapted to open and close the passage through the valve seat, the relatively fixed valve member having a valve seat, an outlet chamber below the valve seat, a central internally screw-threaded sleeve, means for supporting the sleeve in the member, an externally screw-threaded tube screw-threaded through the sleeve, a fiat Wing shaped to loosely fit in the outlet chamber and pivotly secured to the tube and having a finger which enters the tube through a slot in the tube, and the movable valve member having a valve stem in the tube for the purpose, as described.
8. A. flushing valve comprising a. relatively fixed valve member and a movable valve member adapted to open and close the passage through the valve seat, the relatively fixed valve member having a valve seat, an outlet chamber below the valve seat, a tube in the outlet chamber, means for supporting the tube centrally in the outlet chamber; the movable valve member having a stem in the tube, a Wing pivotally secured to the tube and having a finger which enters the tube through an opening in the tube, said finger being adapted to engage with the valve stem, for the purpose as described.
