Description
JOSEPH ROBEBTS.
Improvement in Gamer-post for Wagon andCarriags.
117,816. Patented August 8, 187! PA'IEN'I C)FFICE.
JOSEPH ROBERTS, OI WORCESTER, MASSAOHUSETTS.
IWIPRVEMENT IN CORNER-POSTS FOR WAGON AND CARRAGE-SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,816, dated August 8, 1871.
T0 all wh0m z't may concern:
Be it k110w11 that I, J osnrn Rommrs, of tl1e city and county of Vorcester and Gommonwealtlr 0t' Massachusetts, 112LV6 invented eert-ain ne W and useful lmprovements in Corner-Posts f0r Wagon and Ca-rriage-Seats; and I do hereby declare tlre following to be a full, elear, and exact descrption of the same, reference beng had to the aecempanying drawing whicl1 'orms a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 represents a plan "iew illustrating tl1e manner of attaching n1y improx*ed corner-post in position on the seat. Fig. 2 represents a front "iew. Fig. 3 represents a view as seen aer0ss tl1e angle of the seat, and Fi 4 represents a back "iew when looking in a direction parallel with the center of the angle of the seat.
The nature of my invention consists in a metallic cerner-post provided With a 00t-piece and rail-supporting sockets, as hereinafter described.
T0 enable 0thers skilled in the art t0 which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I Wll proceedte describe it more in detail.
In the drawing, tlre part marked A represents tl1e corner-wst, wl1ieh is cast with a f00t 0r flange, B, arranged to receive tl1e screws a a a, by means of whieh tl1e postA is secured to the frame of the seat O. ll1e upper end of the post A is cast with a 110110w angular l1ead, 0ne part, 1), of which 'orms a rectangular socket to receive the end of the rail E at the back of tlre seat while the 0th er part, F, '0rms a similar socket te receive the extremity of the rail G at the end of the seat. ll1e ends of the rails E and G are cut s0 as te fit closely into the s0ckets D and F, and are secured therein by screws 01 pins I J as sl10wn, holes bein g drilled in the metal of the sockets for their reception.
By makin gtl1e corner-posts of the seats as above described a great amount of lab0r and trouble is szwed, as the seats can be eonstructed an d put together much more rapidly tl1an when the corners are forrned of wond, while, at the Same time, the sockets D F form a solid metallic brace at the jun ction of the rails E G, thus renderng tl1e parts of greater strength and of much more durability than when constructed in the ordinary manner.
The sockets D F may, if desired, be made of cylindrical or other form; but I prefer to make them rectangular, as shown. Als0, tl1e upriglrt porti0n of the post may be made more 0r less ornamental, to suit the taste 0'the manufacturers 01 the requirement 0r style of the work t0 Whicl1 they are applied.
Having described my improvements in cornerposts f0r wagon and earriageseats, what I claim therein as new and of my nvention, and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A metallic corner-pots '0r wagon and carrage-seats, provided with a supporting-'oot and a soeketed head to receive tl1e extremities of the back and end rails.
. 2. The upright metallic corner-post A, provded witl1 tlxe rectangular sockets I) F, substantially as and for the purpose set f0rtlr.
ln JOSEPH ROBERTS.
