Be it known that 1, JOHN R. SoHwmTnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bettendorf, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Combined Mop and Scrub-Brush, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a combined mop and scrub brush, one of the objects of the invention being to provide a simple and efficient means whereby a mop cloth can be held in either active or inactive position relatively to a scrub brush, the means provided for this purpose being cheap to manufacture and efficient in use.

A further object is to provide a device of this character which is so constructed as to allow the mop cloth to be placed in an ordinary mop wringer.

Another object is to provide a means for detachably holding a scrub brush so that a new brush can be placed in position whenever desired.

A further object is to provide a combined mop and scrub brush which is light and can be handled easily.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

In said drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device in position for use as a mop. Fig. 2 is a like view showing the same in position for use as a scrub brush. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device with the parts in the position shown in Fig. 2, the mop cloth being removed. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the head for holding a scrub brush and one end of a mop cloth. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the spring holding clip.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a handle on one end of which is mounted a ferrule and stem 2 extending from a plate 3. This plate is disposed at an acute angle to the end of the handle 1 and has spring arms 4 diverging from the corner portions thereof. The arms are disposed in pairs, the outer ends of the Specification of Letters Patent.

arms of one pair being turned toward the outer ends' of the opposed arms. These outer inturned ends of the arms of each pair are connected by retaining wires 5 preferably integral with the arms. As shown in Fig. 1 the back 6 of a scrub brush is adapted to be inserted between the two pairs of arms 4, the inturned end portions of these arms and the retaining wires 5 engaging that face of the back from which the bristles 7 of the brush project. Thus the brush will be held securely to the handle 1 and, should it be desired to remove it for any purpose, it would merely be necessary to force it laterally from between the arms 4.

Projecting from the outer end of the plate 3 is an angular loop 8 having a straight intermediate portion which extends through one end of a mop cloth 9 preferably formed of a strip of fabric the ends of which are secured together. This mop cloth 9 also engages a loop 10 provided at one end of an arm 11 which is pivotally connected, as at 12, to a clip 13 embracing the handle 1 and clamped thereon in any desirable manner, as by means of a bolt 14 which bolt can also constitute the pivot of the arm 11. Ears 15 extend laterally from the clip and each ear is connected by a spring 16 to an intermediate portion of the arm 11. These springs are so positioned as to hold the arm 11 normally pressed against the handle 1 when extended either upwardly or downwardly from the clip 13. When the arm 11 is extended upwardly along handle 1, as shown in Fig. 2, the mop cloth 9 will be held extended above the handle 1 so that the brush can thus be held for scrubbing without interference by the mop clothev However, should it be desired to use the mop cloth, it would merely be necessary to invert the structure to the position shown in Fig. 1, first pushing the arm 11 past its pivot 14 so as to cause the springs 16 to hold the Patented Apr. 4, 1916.
