Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEF FRITSGH, OE CARLSTADT, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT |N.'HOLDERS FOR WA'X CANDLES OR TAPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,763, dated August 8, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEF FRITscH, of Carlstadt, in the county of Bergen and State vof New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Holder for "Wa-x Candles or Taper; and I do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this speciication, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspon ding parts in both igures.
This invention consists in the novel construction of aholder for wax candles or taper, whereby the burning of the latter can be so regulated that only a required length of it is consumed if left burning, thus preventing the consumption of the whole candle or taper by neglect, and avoiding consequent accidents.
' To enable others to construct holders for wax candles or taper in accordance with my invention, I will proceed to describe the same.
A is a box, made to hold any size of wax-candle or taper'. This box is preferably made of metal, and may be of a plain or ornamental form. It is provided with a suitable handle, a, and with a top or cover, B, which may be hinged to the side of the box or otherwise secured to allow of its easy opening. This top or cover B is provided with a central opening, b, of a size to allow the wax candle or taper to pass freely through thel same. Oirthe inner sinface of the cover B a spring-slide, C, is arranged across the opening b. Said slide is provided with an opening, c, corresponding in size with the opening b in the cover B. Y A light spring, el, arranged within a tube e, acts on the slide C so as to bring its opening c beyond the opening b. A knob, j', is securedto one end of the slide C from the outside of the cover B, and allowed to move in a slot, g, made in the cover B.
N ow, when the wax candle or taper is placed into the box A, a required length of it is passed through the opening b by operating the slide C so as to bring' its opening c directly under and in line with the opening b, when the action of the spring will hold the candle or taper fast. But as soon as the latter is burned down to the edge of the slide C the tension of the spring, being no longer resisted bythe candle or taper, will move the slide so that its opening c passes beyond the opening b, whereby the inner edge of the opening c cuts oft' the biuning wick, and thus extingui shes the light.
Wax candles or taper, being much used in bedrooms where gas-light is not had, can be safely used with this holder, accidents consequent upon the neglect of putting out the light being entirely prevented thereby.
Vhatis here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
The construction of holders for wax candles or taper, substantially as herein described.
JOSEF FRITSOH.
