Description

y i dntell @iate Latent @Milice `WILLIAM o. EBERT, or HANNIBAL,
`Letters Pateat,2 \o..102,926, dated Mci-y 10, 1870.
l IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-EXTINGUISHERS.
The Schedule lreferred to in these Letters Patent and making part ofthe same To all 'whom it'mayconcern.,- t
Be` it `known that I, WILLIAM C. Elsner, of Hannibal,rin the county of Marion, in the State of Missouri, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Self-Extinguishing Lamp Attachment for aV ker osene or other fluid-burning lamp; audfI do hereby ldeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact `description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being-had to the accompanying drawing making a partot' this specilication.
, Ihejnature of my invention consists in Yajslidiine; ,extinguslertted over the wick-tube; of a lamp, and connected, by means of a lever, to a rod extending down over tl1e.body ofthe lamp and through its base., the said rodbeing so arranged, in conneetionwith a springr at its lower end and a sleeveisliding upon the stemof the lamp, that, while the lamp is in an uprightposition,or in the hands of a person, the light- `will continue to burn; but, in case olaccident, such as overturning, -will be put out by the extinguisher,
vwhich will he pushed up'over the wick by the spring,
which is released when the lamp is overturned.
In the drawiugs- A represents the body;
B, the base; and
C, the stem of the lamp. i
D represents the extinguisher arranged to slide up and down on the wick-tube E.
F represents a lever, attached at one end to the extinguisherby `means ot'a link, f, the other end ol' said lever being attached bymeans of a link, g, toa rod or bolt, g', sliding'in a short slottedtube, h, att-ached to the metal of the burner;
'In the lower end of said rod or'bolt a recess or slot l is cut, forming a hook, which engages in a similar hook 'formed on the end of the rod g, when the cap ofthe lamp is screwed in pla-ee, and allows said cap to heeasily removed. Y
The rod G extends vdown over the body of the lamp, and'is attached to` a sleeve, H, surrounding` i and sliding:r upon the stem ofl the lamp. Said rod extends down through the baseof the lamp, and to itsdower end is secured a thimble, l', containing a f spring, J, which has a bearing' against the upper part oft-he `recess K, in which thethimble slides.
` It will he seen that, when the lamp is lifted by the sleeve s'urroundiugrthe stem, the weight of the lamp will overcome lche .resistance of the spring, and the lever F, operated by the rod G, will depress the extinguisher, leaving the wick uncovered; and-that, l ,when the lamp is placed in an upright position on 'a table or other surface, the rod will be kept lin proper position by the surface of the table, which keeps the thimble flush with the lower surface of the base' of the lamp.
W'hen' the lamp is overturned the spring is allowed to `exert `its force, and, depressing therod G, ,will throw up the extinguisher, covering the wick and extinguishing the dame. v Having described my invention,
The sleeve H, in combination with the rod G, sub
stantiallyas herein described.
WILLIAM Cf. EBERT.
