To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY C. RownLL,

a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Modesto, in the county of Stanislaus and State of California, have invented an Improvement in Wheeled Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to grading and excavating devices, and more particularly to a wheeled scraper.

One object of the invention is the provision of a novel dumping means for the scraper whereby it is rendered unnecessary to tilt the entire structure in order to unload the contents thereof.

Another object is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, durable, efficient in carrying out the purpose for which is is designed and inexpensive to manufacture.

The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a top plan view of the scraper constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation partly in section.

Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, it will be seen that the invention comprises a scoop 5 having a curved rear portion 6 provided with the transversely extending opening 7 at the rear end adjacent the bottom thereof through which the contents of the scoop are adapted to be discharged. The scoop 5 is also provided at the top of the curved portion 6 with a hood 8 which prevents the contents of the scoop from falling over the back thereof.

The scoop 5 consists of the sides 9 in each of which is mounted a stub axle 10 extending through said sides and having mounted upon its exterior end the wheels 11. The inner ends of the axle form eyes to which are connected the ends of a U-shaped draft attachment 12.

An adjustable cover 13 is provided for the openings 7 in the scoop and consists of the segmental side plates 14 which are pivoted exteriorly of the scoop at 15. The curved rear portion of the pivoted cover 13 is of substantially the same contour as the rear Specification of Letters Patent.

portion 6 of the scoop and is spaced therefrom except at its lower end where it engages the bottom of the scoop as indicated at 16 in Fig. 2 thus effectively covering the opening 7 and preventing the material from accidentally discharging therefrom. The covering member 13 is provided at its top with the rearwardly extending handle 17 fixedly secured thereto and which has mounted thereon a longitudinally slidable locking rod 18 adapted to extend through an opening in the upper end of the cover 13 and engage a similar opening 19 formed in an arcuate forwardly extending arm 20 secured to the rear portion 6 of the scoop by means of rivets 21. hen the rod 18 is in engagement with the opening 19, as seen in Fig. 2, the member 13 is retained in covering position. Should it be desired to discharge the contents of the scoop 5, the rod 18 may be slid along the handle 17 to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2, when it will be possible to swing the cover member 13 about its pivot 15 to the position shown in Fig. 3 when the opening 7 will be exposed and the contents of the scoop permitted to pass out through the rear thereof. In order to eifect the entire discharge of the contents, the cover member 13 may be held in adjusted position, as shown in Fig. 3, by again inserting the locking rod 18 into an opening 22 formed adjacent the upper end of the arcuate arm 20. The sides 1% of the cover member are provided with oppositely disposed notches 23 therein adapted to receive the stub axles 10 when the parts are in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

I claim 1. A wheeled scraper comprising a scoop having an opening therein, a cover for said opening pivoted to said scoop, the rear portion of said cover being spaced from said scoop for a greater portion of its area and engaging the same adjacent the bottom thereof, a handle for said cover, an arcuate arm having a plurality of openings therein secured to said scoop, and a locking rod slidable on said handle and adapted to engage the openings in said arm whereby said cover may be adjusted in opened and closed positions.

A wheeled scraper comprising a scoop having an opening therein, a cover for said opening pivoted to said scoop, the rear portion of said cover being spaced from said scoop for a greater portion of its area and engaging the same adjacent the bottomthereof, a handle for said cover, anarcuate arm having a plurality of openings therein secured to said scoop, a locking rod slidable on said handle and adapted to engage the openings in said arm whereby said cover may be adjusted in opened and closed positions, and a hood for said scoop.

A Wheeled scraper comprising a scoop having a transverse opening at the rear and adjacent the bottom thereof,a cover for said opening pivoted to said scoop and engaging the same at a point adjacent said opening, a supporting member extending above said scoop, and means carried by said cover and adapted to engage said supporting member for retaining the former in closed and opened positions.

A Wheeled scraper comprising a scoop having a discharge opening in the rear thereof, a cover for said opening pivoted to said scoop, a supporting member extending above said scoop, and meansadjustable relative to said cover and adapted for engagement with said supporting member for retaining the former in closed and opened positions.

5. A Wheeled scraper comprising a scoop having a discharge opening therein, a cover for said opening engaging said scoop adjacent thereto, an arm carried by said scoop and having openings therein, and a locking rod carried by said cover and adapted to engage said openings for retaining the cover in closed and opened positions.
