UNITED STATES JOHN-N. WALLIS, OE FLEMING, Ann THEODORE WALLIS, O so1PIO,-N. Y.
PATENT OFFICE.
ROAD-SCRAPER.
SPEOIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,698, dated July 19, 1881. Application filed May 13, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that we, JOHN N. WALLIS, of Fleming, and THEODORE WALLIS, of Scipio, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Scrapers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the'letters of reference marked thereon,
which form part of this specification, in
which- Figure 1 is a plan View, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of our invention. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the manner of hanging the scraper to the frame.
The object of our invention is to construct a scraper for scraping up earth in such manner that it shall also subserve the purpose of a dumping cart or wagon, so that the earth can be readily taken up by the scraper, transported to the place where it is needed, and there deposited with but little labor. This object we attain by means of the device hereinafter described and claimed. 7
In the drawings, A indicates the body of the scraper, which is formed with the curved or concave bottom a and the two sides a a, having ears I) b, as seen in Fig. 3, that are pivoted to the posts B B, in order to allow the scraperbody to swing freely between them. The scraper-body is provided with the front scrapin g-edge, a and it is pivoted at points in rear of a line taken transversely through its center, whereby the portion of the scraper-body in advance of its pivotal points will be the heaviest, in order that its front scraping-edge will normally incline downward toward the ground, thus insuring the action of the scraper in taking up earth. The vertical posts, to which the scraper-bodyis pivoted, are secured to the rear ends of the horizontalbars O O, that are connected at their forward ends bya cross-bar, C, so as to constitute a rectangular frame. A tongue or pole, D, is secured to the cross-bar of this frame in any suitable way, whereby the scraper can be readily drawn over the ground, supporting-wheels E'E being provided for the scraper-frame, to admit of such transportation of the scraper.
. The means employed for dumping the earth from the scraper-body consists of a lever, F, pivoted to one of the postsB, and connected with the swinging scraper-body by means of a link, G, two of said levers being employed, if
desired, in which case the levers will be pivwhich the said lever can be engaged, thus ob- 'viatin g the necessity of the holding down of the handle .by hand. This rackis constructed in any suitable way, and is secured to one of the posts B of the scraper-frame, After sufficient earth has been scraped up and transported by the scraper to its destination, which may be a railroad or other place where earth is needed, the contents of the scraper can be readily dumped byv depressing the lever-handle so as to elevate the forward part of the scraper and depress or tilt its rear portion, whereby the earth will readily fall out at the rear ofthe scraper-body.
By means of the above device the labor incident to the removal of earth from one. place to another will be materially lessened, and a greater amount of Work performed in a given time than could possibly be accomplished by using a dumping-cart.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv 1 i 1. The scraper -A, provided with'ears-b b in the rear of its center, which are pivoted between the sides of its frame, in combination with the link G and lever F, all constructed and arranged to dump the dirt from the rear or back end of the scraper, substantially as set forth.
'2. The combination of a rectangular-shaped frame consisting of side pieces, (J (l, having uprights B and transverse bar 0, with scraper A, having ears I; I), link G, lever F, and rackbar H, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
1 In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we affix our-signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN N. WALLIS. THEODORE WALLIS. Witnesses. 7 Ones. F. DURSTON, JOHN T. PINGREE.
