Be it known that I, STEPHAN BLAZK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New '.York, have invented a new and Improved Permutation-Lock, of which 'the following is a full, clear, and exact description. l
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved permutation lock more f the bolt and to prevent disengagement and bolt into retracted position, the bolt having unlockingunless a person is in the possession of the combination of the lock. p
In order to produce the desired result, use is made of a spring-pressed bolt and permutation mechanism for moving said movement wholly independent of the said controlling mechanism to allow of engaging the keeper with the bolt at'the time the controlling mechanism is in locking position. A practical embodiment ofthe invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification,in which similar characters of reference'indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

The tumbler J is provided with a pin J3 eX- tending into segmental slots J4, J5 formed in the loose tumblersvJ and J2. The tumblers J, J and J 2 are provided at their peripheral faces withnotches J, J7 and Js adapted to register with each other and to register with the post to allow of moving the spindle C, the tumblers J, J and J2, the slide H and the bolt F in a rearward direction with a view to retract the bolt F, that is, to move the latter out of engagement with the keeper G. The slots J 4, J 5 are of different length so that when the spindle C is turned in one direction its pin J3 travels in the slots J 4, J 5 until it reaches one end of the slot J 4 to carry the tumbler J along on further turning of the spindle C in the same direction and until the notch J 7 of the tumbler J is in register with the post I. The spindle C is now turned in the opposite direction until the pin J3 engages the corresponding end of the slot J5 to carry the tumbler J2 along until its notch J8 is in register with the post I and then the spindle C is again turned in the opposite direction until the notch J 3 of the tumbler J is in register with the post l. It is understood that this forward and backward turning movement of the spindle C is governed by the combination of the lock and indicated on the dial D by the pointer 1E. It is further understood that when the tumblers have reached the registering position, the user pushes the knob C rearwardly to cause the slide H to move rearwardly with the spindle C. This movement of the slide H causes a like movement of the pin F2 and consequently of the bolt F to disengage the latter from the keeper G and thus allow of'swinging the keeper out of the casing A to the parts B and B. After the keeper G is disengaged from the bolt F the operator turns the knob C and then releases the same to allow the spring F3 to return the bolt F and slide H to normal outermost position. The turning of the knob C moves the notches J 3, J7 and J 8 of the tumblers out of register with the post I so that the spindle C is held against rearward movement as the peripheral faces of one, two or all of the tumblers abut against the post I and hence prevent backward movement of the spindle C. When the several parts of the lock are in this position the keeper G can be rengaged with the bolt F by swinging the hasp G into closed position. When this takes place the keeper G pushes the bolt F back against the tension of its spring F3, as previously explained, and when the keeper G has finally entered the casing A the bolt returns to locking position, that is, engages the keeper 'and J2 their peripheral faces are prefer ably notched and engaged by springs K and K attached to the guide H so as to move with the same together with the tumblers.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A permutation lock provided with a spring-pressed bolt normally held by its spring in locking position, mechanism for moving the bolt into unlocking position, the said mechanism having a slide on one side of the bolt and connected therewith to permit the bolt to have limited movement thereon, a spindle secured to the slide for operating it, and means for guiding the bolt, slide and spindle on movement of the parts in the direction of the length of the bolt.
2. A permutation lock, comprising a sliding and spring pressed bolt, a slide, means connecting the bolt and slide to permit the bolt to have limited' movement on the slide, a spindle secured to the slide, tumblers mounted on the spindle and connected with each other to be Operated by the spindle, the tumblers having notches in their peripheries, and a post adjacent the tumblers and with which the notches of the tumblers are adapted to register,
3. A permutation lock, comprising a spindle having a knob, atumbler attached to the spindle, tumblers loose on the spindle and controlled by the said fixed tumbler, the tumblers having peripheral notches adapted to register with each other, a bolt having an elongated slot through which extends the said spindle, a pin on the said bolt, a spring pressing the said pin, a slide moving with the said spindle and having a slot engaged by the said pin, and a ixeyd guide post for the said bolt and slide to slide on, the post forming an abutment for the said tumbler notches and the latter when in register being also in register with the said post to allow bodily movement of the bolt, slide and tumblers on moving the spindle in the direction of the length of the bolt.
4. A permutation lock provided with a sliding and spring pressed bolt, a slide upon which the bolt has limited sliding movement, a spindle secured to the slide, a tumbler fixed on the spindle and provided with a pin, tumblers mounted loosely on the said spindle and provided with segmental slots engaged by the said pin, the said fixed and loose tumblers having notches at their peripheral faces, and a, fixed post extending across the name to this specification in the presence of peripheral faces of the tumblers and adapttwo subscribing Witnesses.
