To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARK G. JADRONJA, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to locks, and has for an object to provide a lock whereby the bolt will be released and assume an unlocked position when a key is inserted in the lock in the usual manner to operate the same. For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a casing provided with a bolt slidable therein, a locking bar mounted on the casing, a bolt lug on the locking bar and adapted to engage the said bolt to vhold the same rigid relative to the casing, a handle on the bolt for operating the same, and a key lug on the locking bar for disengaging the bolt lug from the bolt by moving the locking bar when the key lug is engaged by a key inserted in the casing to operate the bolt.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, constituting a part of this specication, in which similar characters of reference' denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my lock with the bolt extended from -the lock; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 in Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the bolt in unlocked posit-ion, and Fig. l is a sectional view disclosing the position of the locking bar holding the bolt in unlocked position.

Referring more particularly to the views- I employ a casing 10 for attachment to a door 11 or the like. A bolt 12 is mounted to slide in the casing 10 and is provided with a lug 13 for limiting the movement orn the bolt 12 in the casing and a lug 1/1 adapted to receive a bit end 15 of a key 16 adapted to operate the bolt 12.

A locking bar 17, having the appearance and action of a flat spring, is secured to the casing 10 with an end of the bar 17 free, and secured to the bar at the said end is a bolt lug 18 having a handle 19 and adapted to project through the casing 10 to engage the bolt 12 by occupying one of two holes 20, 21 provided in the bolt 12. Secured to the locking bar 17 is a laterally extending key Specification of Letters Patent.

and registering holes 23, 241 are formed in the casing 10 and the locking bar 17, respectively, to receive an end 25 of the key 16. The bolt 12 is provided with a handle 26 extending through a slot 27 in the upper side of the casing 10 and a coiled spring 28 is mounted in the casing 10 and engages the bolt 12 for actuating the same to move outwardly from the casing. The key 16 pro.- vided with the bit 15 and a turning end 25 has thereon a lug 29 for engagement with the key lug 22 of the locking bar 17.

Assuming that the bolt 12 is in locked or extended position relatively to the casing 10 with the bolt lug 18 in the opening 21 of the bolt 12 when it is desired to unlock the bolt and move the same into the casing 10, by means of the key 16, the said key is inserted in a slot 30 in the casing with the turning end 25 engaging the hole 24. As will be seen in Fig. 4 when the key is in the mentioned position the lug 29 of the key will extend through the slot 22@- and engage the key lug 22, thus moving the free end of the locking bar 17 away from the casing 10 and disengaging the bolt lug 18 from the bolt 12 by moving the same out of the opening 21. Now by turning the key 16 so that the bit end thereof engages the lug 14, the bolt will move into the casing 10. In Fig. 4 I disclose a view of the key 16 moving the bolt 12 into the casing and showing the position of the locking bar 17 and bolt lug 18, the locking bar being held away from the casing by the lug 29 on the key 16 while the key is moving the boltinto the casing. When the outer end of the bolt 12 is flush with the casing 10, the opening 20' in the bolt will substantially be alined with the bolt lug 18 and as the key has reached the end of its stroke, the lug 29 will be disengaged from the key lug 22 and the locking bar 17 will snap against the casing 10 thus moving the bolt lug 18 into the opening 20 and into engagement with the bolt 12. The bolt is now in unlocked position and rigidly held by the bolt lug on the locking bar. To release the bolt, an outward pull of the locking bar by means of the handle 19 will disengage the bolt lug 18 and the bolt 12 and the action of the spring 28 will again move the bolt 12 outwardly to a looked position. When it is desired to move the bolt 12 into the casing 10 without employing the key 16, the locking bar 17 is pulled outwardly to release the bolt 12 and the said bolt can then be moved into the casing 10 by means of the handle 2G in the bolt 12.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that a simple and effective lock is provided and although l have shown the same as secured to the side of a door it will be understood that my lock can be employed in any convenient manner such. as a mortise lock or the like.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A look comprising a casing, a bolt mounted to slide in the casing.` a handle on the bolt and extending exteriorly of the casing through a slot therein, a looking bar having an end thereof secured to the Casing, a handle bolt lug on the said bar for engagement with the said bolt, a key lug on the said bar and normally extending into a slot in the said casing, and a key pro` vided with an end lug for engagement with the said casing and having a lug on the bit thereof for engagement with the said key lug to move the said locking bar and disengage the said bolt lug from the said bolt so that the bolt will be moved when the bit of the key engages the bolt.

2. In a lock, the combination of a bolt mounted to slide in a casing, a spring engaging the bolt to actuate the same, a han- Vdie secured to the bolt and extending ex teriorly of the casing, a spring locking bar having an end thereof secured to the casing, a handled bolt lug on the other end of the locking bar and adapted to engage the said bolt to hold the same rigid and a key lug on the locking bar, the said locking bar being adapted to move and release the bolt lug from the said bolt when the said key lug is engaged by a key inserted in the said casing to operate the said bolt after the same has been released to slide in the casing.

3. A lock comprising a casing, a bolt mounted to slide in said Casing, a looking bar secured to said casing, means carried by said bar to engage said bolt, to hold the same in locked or unlocked position, a key lug on the said bar, and a key provided with a bit having a lug thereon for engaging lthe key lug on the said bar, to cause the locking bar to release the bolt when the key is inserted in the lock said bolt having a recess engaged by the key to withdraw the bolt to its unlocked position.

4. A lock comprising a casing, a bolt mounted to slide in said casing and having a notch in one side thereof, to be engaged by the bit of the key, a locking bar secured to said casing, a bolt lug on the bar, to enthe bolt to hold the same in its locked and unlocked positions, a key lug on the bar, said key lug extending through a curved slot in the said casing, and a key having a bit with a lug thereon, for engaging the key lug to move the locking bar so as to release the bolt when the key is inserted to engage the recess in the side of the bolt, and withdraw the same to its unlocked position.
