Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1915.
Application filed July 22, 1914. Serial No. 852,434.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVAN SrANoIo, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to folding boxes and has for its object to provide a box of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, which is capable of being folded in a compact manner and conveniently extended when desired for use.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a folding box which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efficient and convenient in its use, and inexpensive.
W'fih the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications, can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a cover section of a box, extended. Fig. 2, is a cross sectional view of a cover section of a box when ex tended. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of a cover section, when extended. Fig. 4i is a perspective view of the cover section, when extended. Fig. 5, is a longitudinal sectional view of a body section of a box when extended. Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view of the body section of the box when extended. Fig. 7 is a top plan View of the body section of the box. Fig. 8, is a perspective view of the body section of the box when extended.
A folding box in accordance with this invention includes a foldable cover section and a foldable body section which. are adapted to be detachably connected together when the box is extended or set up. The body section comprises a bottom 9, end walls 10 and 11, a front wall 12, and arear wall 13, the latter being of less height than said front wall 12. Each of the end walls is formed of two sections, hinged together (see Fig. 8)
and the lower section of each end wall is of less height than the upper section.
The inner face of the upper section of each end wall is provided with a vertical groove 14, and the inner face of the upper section of the end wall 10 is formed with a horizontal recess in which is mounted a plate 15, on whichis arranged a slide bolt 16. The inner face of the front wall 12 is formed with a vertically disposed recess in which is mounted a plate 17, on which is arranged a slide bolt 18, and projecting from the inner face of the upper section of the end wall 10 is an eye 19, into which is adapted to extend one end of the bolt 18, whereby the side wall 10 is connected to the front wall 12. The top edge of the rear wall 13 is provided with a pair of pockets 20 and 21. The rear wall 13 is hinged to the bottom 9, as at 22, and said wall 13 can fold in upon the upper face of said bottom 9. The front wall 12 is hinged to the bottom 9, as at 23, and can fold in upon the upper face of the said bottom 9. The top edge of the front wall 12 has mortised therein a lock casing 24.
The cover section consists of a top wall 25, end walls 26 and 27, front wall 28, rear wall 29 and an extension 30, which is hinged as at 31 to the rear wall 29 and provided with dowel pins 32 designed to enter the sockets 20 and 21 of the rear wall of the body portion when the parts are assembled. The rear wall 29 is hinged to the top wall 25, as at 33, and the front wall 28 is hinged to the top wall 25 as at 34:. The front wall 28 and the rear wall 29 can be folded inwardly against the lower face of the top wall 25. The front wall 28 and the rear wall 29 are maintained extended by hooks 35, which are connected as at 36, to the inner face of the top wall 25, and are capable of engaging eyes 37, carried by the front wall 28 and rear wall 29. The extension 30 has each of its ends formed with lateral tongues 38, and are adapted to engage in the grooves 14 when the cover section is mounted upon the body section and when in such position the extension 30, in connection with the rear wall 13, form the rear wall of a box, the studs or pins 32 on the free edge of the extension 30 entering the sockets 20 and 21, in the edge of the rear wall 13 of the body section. The inner face of the extension 30 has secured thereto a pair of plates 39 and each of which is formed with an opening 40, and when the cover section is mounted upon the body section, the extension 30 is connected with the end wall 10, by the slide bolt 16 engaging in the opening tO, if desired the end wall 11 can be provided with a slide bolt 16 to engage in the opening 40 of the other plate 39. The front wall 28, is provided with a keeper 41 which is adapted to be engaged by the bolt of the lock casing 24,'whereby the cover section will be locked to the body section. The front wall 28 is provided with-barbs or pins 42 which are adapted to engage in the top edge of the front wall 12 of the body section by penetrating said edge. The front and rear walls of the body section can be folded upon the bottom thereof and the upper sections of the end walls of the body sec.- tion can be foldedupon the front and rear walls of said body section. The front and rear walls of the cover section can be folded against the top wall of said cover section and the latter can then be nested upon the folded body'section.
What lclai iS= 1. A foldable box consisting of a body section and a cover section, said body section including foldable front and rear walls, the front wall of greater height than the rear walland provided with means for connect- James a t is sa n ma be ob aine fe means engaging in said extension for connecting it thereto.
2. A foldable box consisting of a body section and a cover section, said body section including foldable front and rear walls, the
front wall of greater height than the rear wall and provided with means for connecting an end wall thereto, and said cover section including foldable front and rear walls and a hinged extension carried by said rear wall, said extension having means engaging in saidgrooves, and one of the end walls of the body section provided with means engaging in said extension for connecting it thereto, and means for inaintainingthe front and rear walls of the cover section extended.
3. A foldable box consisting of a body section and a cover section, said body section including foldable front and rear walls, the end walls thereof being provided with vertically disposed grooves, said cover section including foldable front and rear walls, a hinged extension carried by its rear wall, said extension having means for engaging the grooves in the end walls .of said body section, and means on one of the end walls of said body section forengaging s i 031 section extension for connecting it thereto.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presenceof two witnesses.
