Description

CARL H. EPPLE, GF OAKLAND, CALIFOIRFIA.
CHECK-PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee. ML, MM5.,
Application filed March i6, 1915. Serial No. 14,731.
- To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL H. EPPLE, a citil zen of the United States, residing at iOakland, in the county-of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful-Improvements in. Check-Protectors,
of which the following is a specification.
- tector, the casing being in section.
This invention relates to improvements in check protectors and hasfor its principal object the construction of a small device of this character which may be carried on or about the person of a user. l
Another object of my invention i's to so construct the device that the check is effectively protected against alterations, and, still a further object is to provide a device which is neat and simple, and may be sold at a nominal price.l
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in the following specification and more partidularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specication, Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing the manner in which my improved device is used to protect checks. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the interior portions of the pro- Fig. 3 is a view in section taken at right angles to the view in Fig. 3. Fig. i is a view in side elevation of a modified form of roller used with my device. Fig. 5`is a view in side elevation of the device with the lid in position on the case.
Referring to corresponding parts by the same numerals of reference, l denotes the outer case provided with a lid 2; This oase is rectangular in horizontal cross section and Within the case is a U-shaped spring forni 3 having pivotally mounted adjacent the outer ends of the U a roller 4, consisting of a. series of circumferentially'dis posed matting edges 6. Whilel prefer to'construct this roller with contmuous cutting edges l may `findit advantageous to use the circumferentially disposed cutting points 5 as shown in Fig.
Pivotally mounted in the frame 2 above the roller 4 'is a cylindrical inking pad of absorbent material moistened with a special ink, whichunder the influence of any of the chemical solutions used for erasing the ordinary W riting Huid7 has a tendency to spread through the fiber of the paper, thereby imparting a stain which indicates to an observer, that a check has been tampered with. rithe U-shaped form has substantially the. outline of the container case l, and is adapted to fit snugly within the same and to be held therein by frictional Contact.
The device is used by removing the cap 2 and after the check is written running the roller longitudinally along the words denoting the amount for which the check is drawn, thus leaving a number of rows of.
lines partly cut into the paper, or rows of short dots, in which is deposited the ink from the pad. This ink is not only deposited on the surface but into the fabric ofthe paper. erase the figures indicating the amount of the check, this ink will spread and run indicating at once thati the check has been changed. A further protection is also afforded due to the fact that a word can not be written over the perforated cut lines Without the ink running into these out portions, thus showing a ragged line rather than a smooth one when the same is written over an unbroken surface.
Whenever an attempt is made to' suo While have shown the preferred.V embodiment of my invention it will be "understood that changes may be made in detail in said spring frame, a plurality of circumferentially disposed cutting edges carried by said roller and means for inking said cutting edges.
2. A check protector comprising a casing, a U-shaped spring frame frictionally held insaid casing, a roller pivoally mounted. in
seidl frame and having one edge extending outslde of Said casing, and means for Hiking said roller.
3. A. cheek protector comprising a casing,
outside of said casing, a plurality of cireuinerentiall disposed euttin@r edfres carried b i o b Y said roller, and an absorbent roller pilotaiy 10 mounted adjacent said cutting roller and adapted to convey ink thereto.
In testimony WheieoiA I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
