Description

J. J. M. TRUXELL.
RECEPTACLE.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 5. 1914.

ATTO R N EY INVENTOR /o%.n 72 144: 2!.
JOHN J. M. TRUXELI), OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
RECEPTACLE.
Application filed-November 5, 1914.
To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN J. M. TRUX- ELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to receptacles and has for its object to provide a device of such class with means for locking the lid or cover to the body of the receptacle.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a receptacle which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, du rable, efficient and convenient in its use, readily set up and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically de scribed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifica tions can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended. In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a receptacle in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of a receptacle in accordance with this invention, a lid being detached. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the locking element for the lid. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of a modified form.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2- and 3 of the drawings 1 denotes a cylindrical body portion which is closed at its bottom and open at its top and has each side, near the top thereof, formed with a pair of oppositely extending lateral pins 2, each having a head 3. Secured to the periphery of the body portion 1, near the upper end, is a vertically disposed casing 1, having a lengthwise slot 5. The casing 4 is closed at its bottom and open at its top and extending down into said casing is the flexible shank 6 of a hinge 7,
the latter is fixedly secured to a lid 8, which is formed with a rim 9. The flexible shank 6 is made of a strip of leather. The shank 6 carries a lug 10 which projects through the Specification of Letters Patent.
llatented Nov. 9, 1915. SerialNb. 2705371.
slot 5. The rim 9 is provided with a pair of laterally extending and oppositely disposed pins 11, each having a head 12. The pins 11 are offset with respect to the pins 2. The reference character 13 denotes a locking member, which is in the form of a bail and is bent upon itself intermediate its ends, as at 14c, 15, to provide a pair of loops through which extends the pins 11. The portions of the bail which project from the loops 14, 15, and which are indicated at 16, are substantially L-shaped in contour and are adapted to engage under the pins 2 whereby the lid 8 is secured to the body portion 1 as illustrated in Fig. 1. By swinging the bail to the position shown in Fig. 2 the L-shaped end 16 of the locking member is removed from engagement with the pins 2 and the cover can be elevated and swung off the body portion 1. The lid or cover 8 has secured thereto a handle 17.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, the construction of the receptacle is similar to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, with this exception, that the lid 8 is provided with a single pin and the body portion 1 with a single pin and the construction of the looking member is different, otherwise than that as stated the construction as illustrated in Fig. 1 is the same as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In Fig. d the rim 9 has a lateral projecting headed pin 18 and the body portion 1 is formed with a lateral projecting pin 19 arranged ofiset with the pin 18. The locking member, which is indicated at 20, is formed from a single length of wire, and is wrapped as at 21 around the loop 18 and that portion of the member 20 which terminates from the loop 21, is substantially L- shaped as at 22 and engages under the pin 19. That portion of the member 20 which terminates upward from the loop 21 constitutes a handle as at 23. When the locking member is in the position as shown in Fig. 4, the lid 8 is secured to the body portion 1, and when the L-shaped portion of the looking member 20 is shifted from engagement with the pin 19, the lid 8 can be removed from the position shown in Fig. 2 and swung back on its hinge.
What I claim is A receptacle comprising a body portion, a lid hinged thereto, a pair of pins projecting from the sides of said lid at diametrically opposite points thereon, a pair of pins projecting from opposite sides of said body tions and adapted to encircle the rim of said 10 portion, and arranged in a vertical plane of lid when locked.
the aforesaid pins and a locking member In testimony whereof I affix my signapivotally mounted upon the pins carried ture in the presence of two witnesses by the lid and havlng L'shaped portions en- JOHN J. M TRUXELL.
gaging under the pins carried by the body portion whereby the lid is locked to the Witnesses: body portion, said locking member having a MAX H. Snonovrrz, curved portion connecting the L-shaped p0r- A. KEMPLER.
