motive type, but as it can be' used in other types of boilers, such as marine and staltionary boilers, 1 do not restrict myself to its use only in boilers of the locomotive type.
The object of my invention is to provide a superheater that will not interfere with, or impair the boiler ,in any respect, will be a construction that is strong and inexpensive,
easy to repair and simple so that it will obviate parts,diicult and expensive to make, such as all pipes in the smoke box, except the blowerl and exhaust stand, large flues that are costly to make and are bad in that 35. they leak, and the pipe coils in them and their connections, and the ditliculty to make an expensive throttle box inside the boiler and which will render a steam .dome unnecessary, although such may be used if desired. More particularlyy I have aimed to provide a superheater especially adapted with other boiler improvements that have made, and for which I tiled applications for patent, and in particular it will be found that my present invention has matter in common with the subject of my application No. 619,051, tiled April 5, 1911, and to the extent that the matter claimed herein is common to the two applications, the present application is a continuation of said applicanon No. 619,051. l
1n the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section, somewhat ofnecessity diagrammatic, of a boiler of the locomotive type embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig.' l.
The boiler shown in the drawings has a shell 10, substantially cylindrical in form,
A larger at its rear end than at its front end,
and having at its rear end such a lire box 11v as that of my application No. 619,051, and at its front end a smoke box 12 with a hre chamber 13 intermediate the lire box and the smoke box and composed of a cylindrical shell 14, and front, or flue sheets and heads 15, lire tubes 16 being extended from the flue sheet 17 at the front end of the tire box to the rear flue sheet of said chamber, and tire tubes 18 being extended from the front flue sheet of said chamber to the flue sheet 19'forming the rear of the smoke box.
As the iuesheets, or heads 15 extend en tirely between the boiler shell 10 from side to side, and the shell 14 is eccentrically lo? cated, a crescent shaped chamber 20 is provided between the shell 14 and the boiler shell 10. Said chamber 20 constitutes the superheating chamber to which steam from the steam space in theboiler is conducted by a pipe 21 leading fromV a high point in the boiler to the upper part of said chamber 20 where the heat from the lire chamber heats it to a high temperature. IThe superheated steam is taken from the superheating chamber 20, preferably at the bottom thereof, by a discharge pipe 22 having a throttle valve 23 from which pipes 24 run to the respective steam chests 25. A pipe, o." pipes 26 (two being shown in the drawings) that are preferably coiled, or manifolded to extend back and forth between the boiler shell and the fiues, are connected at their upper ends with the superheater chamber at the upper side thereof and also attheir lower ends at which point said pipes are each provided with a suitable valve 27 that permits superheated steam to flow from the upper vpart of said chamber through said pipes 2G where it is condensed into saturated steam and discharged into the lower part of said chamber again to regulate the temperature in said chamber, but prevents circulation through said pipes 26 when the throttle valve is open. Said pipes 26 and their valves 27 may connect to the superheating chamber 20 inside, or outside the boiler for convenience in operating or repairing theA valves. TWhen the throttle valve 23 is closed, steam will enter the pipe, or pipes 2G at the upper end' and circulating therethrough will condense in passing through the portions of the pipes in the colder part of the boiler and being discharged into the lower side of thc superheater chamber will ,revent objectionable rise, or increase in the temperature of the ire chamber shell 14 when the throttle valve 23 is closed. lVhen the throttle valve is open the valve 27 willA close and thus prevent saturated steam entering the discharge 22. Without the provision of means, such as the pipes 26, to pass saturated, or condensed steam'into the superheater chamber when the throttle is closed, inasmuch as the fire chamber 13 continues to superheat the steamafter the throttle valve is closed, the fire chamber shell 14 would become too hot. This is prevented and the temperature within 'the .superheater chamber 20 is regulated and kept ddwn by the introduction of the saturated, or condensed steam into the same, yet when the throttle valve is Vopen the influx of saturated steam from the regulating pipes 26 into the super-heater chamber is prevented and the discharge of saturated steam to the steam chest, is avoided. The coils, or manifolds of the condensing pipes 2G should be close together toward the bottom of the boiler since ordinarily the water in the lower part Yof the boiler is of the lowest temperature.
The shell 14: may be of any desired material, such as sheet copper, or steel, and stayed to the boiler by any suitable stays.
To connect the portions of lthe boiler on opposite sides of the diaphragm, or partition which the superheateis and lire. chambers create, I provide water tubes 28 extending through the supcrheater chamber from' one head, or flue sheet .15 to the other. It is to be understoodr that the precise form of the superheating chamber in cross section and the style of the boilerand fire box are not of primary importance, but the form of the chamber and the lconstruction of the boiler and fire box may be any that convenience of design, or other reasons may dictate or suggest. y
Having thus described my vinvention what I claim isp 1. A fire tube boiler having in advance of the fire box, a lire chamber having a substantially round form and spaced within the boiler so as to provide a steam superheating chamber between the same and the boiler wall, and iues connecting said 'lire chamber` and the lire box.
2. A fire tube boiler having in advance of the fire box a fire chamber formed by a substantially round shell, and line sheets at the ends of the shell that extend between the boiler walls, said shell being spaced apart from the boiler shell so as to form a steam superheating chamber around the lire box, and ues extending from the lire box to `one 0f said fiue sheets, and llues extending for- Ward from the other flue sheet.
3. A fire tube boiler having in advance of the lire box a fire chamber that isround .in cross section, fines connecting the latter and the fire box, a chamber situated betweenfthe' exterior of the fire chamber and theexterior of the boiler and surrounding the flre chamber, means to conduct steam from thefboiler into said chamber that -is exterior to the re chamber, and means to lead steam therefrom to the point to be used.

9. A boiler having a shell round in cross section, heating lues, a lire box, a smoke box, a. iii-e chamber located between said fire box 'is the fire box a lire chamber, ues connecting 5** box and saidV smoke box, the inner wall otV which is exposed to the heat ot the tire chamber, said steam chamber having one or more pipes leading from a high point in said chamber back and forth through the water space between said boiler shell and heating lues to a point in the lower part of said chamber for condensing it into saturated steam and discharging it into the lower lpart ot' said chamber to regulate the temperature in said steam chamber having a valve in said pipe for controlling the current through same.

13. The combination with a boiler having a. tire box, a smoke box, a re chamber and heating iues connected therewith of a superheating steam chamber between said lire box and smoke box, extending around said fire chamber, said superheating chamber having one or more inlets and one or more outlets tor the purpose ot' receiving and discharging steam and for increasing and de creasing temperature or maintaining a certain ten'iperature of steam therein.

A tire tube boiler having in advance ot' the lire box a lire chamber, hues connecting the latter and the tire box, a steam superheating chamber situated between the exterior of the tire chamber and thefexterior of the boiler, and means for taking superheated steam from said chamber at one point and delivering it as saturated steam at another point.

A tire tube boiler having in advance ot the tire box a tire chamber, tiues connect ing the latter and the lire box, a steam superheating chamber situated between the exterior o the tire chamber and the exterior of the boiler, means for taking superheated steam from said chamber at one point and delivering it as saturated steam at another point, a throttle controlling the discharge of steam from said chamber, and automatic means to control the delivery of saturated steam to the superheated steam chamber aocording to the condition of the throttle.
