Definitions
- ornamented pottery ware is manufactured which is transparent and gives very effective light and shade effects.
- This effect is obtained by applying to the porous plaster mold of the objects to be. manufactured a highly translucent mass in any desired pat terns and sizes, and this is effected by the application of the substance manually with the assistance of bellows or blowing devices, templets, tubes, sticks and brushes and so on in thick or thin layers according to the style of the various patterns or effect desired.
- porcelain receptacles or objects are then burned, coated with glaze and the final burning is effected in the pottery furnace.
- a method of producing translucent ornaments or designs in pottery which consists in-applying an ornament or design of sub stantial thickness to the mold, said ornament or design being of a material of comparatively low fusibility and translucent when burned, forming the body of the article over the ornament or design, said body being of a material of higher fusibility and less translucent when burned, reducing the body to thinness where it covers the ornament or design and then burning the article thus formed.
Description
IIITE ARNOLD SCHLEGELMILCH, SUHL, GERMANY.
N 0 Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARNOLD SCHLEGEL- MILcn, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at Suhl, in the Kingdom of Prussia and Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Improved Method of Producing Translucent Ornaments or Designs in Pottery; and I do hereby declare that'the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Hitherto for the purpose of producing light pictures or designs (lithophanes) in translucent pottery, the picture was plastically represented in the modeling face of the mold and formed onlyin one mass. In this manner translucent bottoms were formed in pottery hollowware of many kinds, such as beer tankards, milk mugs and so forth. These objects presented in transparency pictures of natural objects, landscapes, towns and floral decorations and the like. Pottery articles have been also provided with eX- tremely small perforations, when these articles were burnt in a ,furnace, the perforations became filled with glazeor they were subsequently filled with colored enamel. This method is confined to very small surfaces however, and is costly so that it has not been largely adopted.
, In accordance with the present invention ornamented pottery ware is manufactured which is transparent and gives very effective light and shade effects. This effect is obtained by applying to the porous plaster mold of the objects to be. manufactured a highly translucent mass in any desired pat terns and sizes, and this is effected by the application of the substance manually with the assistance of bellows or blowing devices, templets, tubes, sticks and brushes and so on in thick or thin layers according to the style of the various patterns or effect desired.
In accordance with the known casting process this translucent painting is covered Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1915 Application filed April 25, 1914. Serial No. 834,373.
porcelain receptacles or objects are then burned, coated with glaze and the final burning is effected in the pottery furnace.
It has already been proposed to arrange side by side different natural-colored clays in uniform thicknesses to form mosaic tiles.
In distinction to such method I obtain by my improved method designs in porcelain with light and shade effects by the diffe ent degrees of translucency to transmitted light. This effect may be further increased by painting the objects.
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to claim, and secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is: j
A method of producing translucent ornaments or designs in pottery which consists in-applying an ornament or design of sub stantial thickness to the mold, said ornament or design being of a material of comparatively low fusibility and translucent when burned, forming the body of the article over the ornament or design, said body being of a material of higher fusibility and less translucent when burned, reducing the body to thinness where it covers the ornament or design and then burning the article thus formed.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
