Be it known that we, MARVIN C. ROBERTS and HUBERT J. CULLUM, citizens of the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvepikes; and we do hereby g to be a full, clear, and f the invention, such as killed in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The spike lock designated generally by the numeral 10 comprises the body 11, having formedat one end the point 12 and at the opposite end the frusto pyramidical head 13, the faces of this head are inclined to conform to the inclination of the wall 9, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Formed centrally of the upper face of the head 13 is the rectangular shank'lt, having formed at its free end the head 15. The whole lock 10 is formed of a relatively ductile metal which will easily bend as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and I j It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use the spike 1 is first set and driven into the tie in the usual manner. The lock 10 is then set so that the pointed end 12 extends into the passage 5 and will pass there- I through until the side walls thereof engage the arcuate'portion 6 at the point 7. The user then strikes the look upon the head 15 thereby driving the same downwardly so that the sides of the body 11 engage the arcuate passage thus causing the body to bend and upon continuing the driving operation, it will be apparent that the end of the lock 10 will pass through the rectangular opening at the side of the sp'ke and thence be driven into the wood of the tie thereby locking the spike firmly in place and eliminating the danger of accidental removal. The lock 10 is driven downwardly until the inclined faces of the frusto pyramidical head engage the outwardly inclined faces-9 thus forming a stop which will be water-proof, thereby preventing the lock from rusting in the passage. Should it be desired to place a new tie in the track, the lock may be withdrawn by placing a suitable pulling tool in position to operate upon the head 15 thereof and thus pulling upwardly thereon and raising the lock from its position in the spike. After the lock has been withdrawn it is apparent that the spike may be withdrawn in the ordinary manner and a new tie placed in Bosition.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination' and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined'in the appended claim.
