To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORMAN I-I. MoRRow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bemidji, in the county of Beltrami and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hinges and more particularly to that type of hinges which are commonly known as leaf hinges.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of a hinge of this nature which has a plurality of twisted tongues formed upon one of the leaves of the same, to facilitate the attaching of the hinge to a post or movable object and also to decrease the number of screws necessary for attaching the hinge.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, this invention consists in such novel features of construction aswill be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
' In describing this invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of refer ence designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which,

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates one of the leaves of a leaf hinge which is constructed of the ordinary type and has a plurality of openings 2 extending therethrough, by means of which the leaf 1 is attached to either a stationary or movable object, as is desired. Hingedly connected to the leaf 1, in the usual manner is the second leaf 5 of the hinge, which in its original form is shaped much as the hinge 1. and which has a single opening 6 extending through the same and centrally located therein. The opening 6 is provided for the purpose of securing the leaf 5 to either a stationary or movable object.
The leaf 5 has a plurality of tongues 10 formed upon and extending outwardly from its outer edges as is clearly shown in Figs.
2 and 3 of the drawings. The tongues 10 are formed by the cutting free of parts of the leaf 5 adjacent the outer edges of the same and bending the parts which are out free outwardly. The tongues 10 are cut in such a manner that when they are twisted as is clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings the extreme lower ends of the same will be pointed so as to be easily in serted into a wooden beam, which forms part of a stationary or movable object.
The tongues 10 will, by means of the twising thereof, when the leaf 5 of the hinge is attached to a stationary or movable obj ect facilitate the holding of the leaf 5 in its proper position and decrease the number of screws necessary for attaching the same in that they will perform functions practically identical with the screws which are such as are ordinarily used for attaching a hinge to an object. By providing a plurality of tongues, about the edge of the leaf 5 of the hinge the stability of the object to which the hinge is attached will be increased as these tongues 10, being formed upon the edges of the leaf 5 will prevent its moving or sagging better than would screws which would necessarily have to be placed inwardly from the edges of the leaf. The twisting of the tongues 10 will prevent their sagging loose or being drawn out of the article in which they are inserted, as the spirals formed by the twisting will more efliciently engage the fiber of the wood of which the article is constructed than would straight edges upon the tongues.
Should it be desired tongues similar to the tongues'lO may beformed upon the leaf 1 of the hinge thus decreasing the number of screws necessary for attaching this leaf of the hinge to an article. I
In practical fields certain minor features of construction may necessitate alterations to which the patentee is entitled provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
