Be it known that I, GEORGE citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of llisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cover-Irenches for Fruit-Jars, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in cover wrenches for fruit jars, and it pertains more especially, among other things, first, to the means for increasing the friction between the clamping wire of the wrench and thc cover of the fruit jar, whereby the liability of the wrench slipping on the cover as the latter is being screwed on and off of the jar, is prevented, and second, to the modified form of operating handles with which the clamping wire is used.

My invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in

It will be understood that the clamping wire l shown in the several views, is of ordinary construction, and that theA same, when in use, is adapted to engage the periphery'of a fruit jar cover as it is being used for screwing such cover on and ofi of the ar. To prevent the clamping wire from slipping upon the cover when thus used, I have provided the same with a fine spirally coiled wire 2, which coiled wire formsa gripping contact surface between the cover and clamping wire and prevents such wire from slipping upon the cover, as stated.

The handles 3 are pivotally connected together by a rivet 6 at a distance from their ends in the ordinary manner.

By the modied form of cover wrench shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the handles 7, 7 are pivota-lly connected together at their converging ends bf a rivet 7, and the clamping wire l is connected with such handles at a distance in rear of said pivot by the hooks 4, which engage in the apertures 9.

In view of the fact that the front ends of the handles 7 are brought within the circle described by the clamping wire 1, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, it becomes necessary to attach such wires to the handles upon one side of their longitudinal center so that the protruding front ends of such handles will be thereby brought above the upper surface of the cover, while the latter is being clamped by said wire. To accomplish this object the pivot-ed ends 8, 8 of said handles are formed upon one side of the handles proper 7, while the ends of the clamping wire l are connected with the apertures 9 upon the opposite sides of said handles, whereby, as the clamping wire is brought around the cover, the pivoted ends of said handles are brought above the upper surface of the cover, whereby the clamping wire may be caused to firmly impinge the periphery of the cover by bringing' the handles 7 together.

Having thus described my what I claim as new, Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with the clamping wire of a' cover wrench, of a friction wire spirally wound upon the surface of said clamping wire, said spirally wound wire being adapted to form a friction bearing between the clamping wire and said cover.

2.
