Improvement in Hose-*Leak Stoppers.
N0.H5,715. Paten-tedJune6,1871.
ivrrnn S'rn'rns WILLIAM C. DAVOL, JR., OF FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HS-LEAK STOPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,715, dated June 6, 1871.
To allpersons to whom these presents may come Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. DAvoL, Jr., of Fall River, of the county of Bristol, of the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful or Improved Hose-Leak Stopper; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which- Figure l is a top view, Fig. 2 an end elevation, and Fig. 3 a central and transverse section of the article as opened and resting upon a plane surface.
In the drawing, A and B denote two semitubular jaws, having, when closed, a cylindrical bore, and being hinged together at one side of such, as shown at'a. Opposite to where the said jaws are so connected, one of them has a tubular standard, b, extended from it to receive a screw, C, which goes up through such standard. The said screw has a flat head, d, as shown, in order to enable such head to be passed between and below two ears, c e, projecting, as exhibited, from the lower jaw. A nut, f, provided with a handle, g, extending froinit in manner as represented, is screwed upon the screw C. Each jaw on its inner surface has a thick lining or cushion, h, of India rubber or other suitable elastic water-proof material afixed to it. The formation of the head and shank of the screw being as represented, the shank, after having been passed between the ears e e so as to carry the head a short distance below them, will, after being turned ninety degrees and drawn upward so as to bring the head up against the ears, estop the screw from being revolved with the nut while the latter may be in the act of being turned around on the screw.
In applying the lealnstopper to a burst hose it is intended for it to embrace the saine and cover the hole that may have been made by the bursting of the hose, after which, by means of the screw and nut, the water-proof elastic cushions of the jaws are to be clamped upon the hose. l
The leak-stopper, made as described, has been found to be very eiiicient in use. It is well-known that the bursting of the hose of a dre-engine is a common occurrence, and frequently occasions great inconvenience and loss. It therefore becomes a desideratum to have some simple means at hand for im mediately remedying the evil. That which I have invented completely does this.
I claim- The hose-leak stopper, constructed as described-viz., of the two semi-tubular jaws A B, hinged together, their rubber linings or water-proof cushions h h, and means, as explained, for clamping such jaws or the linings upon a hose, such means being the ears e c, the screw C, the tubular standard b, the nut f, and its handle g, all being as represented.
