IMPROVEMENT IN CAT-HEAD ANCHO-RI-STOPPERS.

Specieation forming part ofLetters Patent No. 109,998, dated December 13, 1870.

To all lwhom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY BAR- KER, of Windsor, in the county of Hants, Nova Scotia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mode of Securing Ships Anchers; and I do hereby declare that the following is .a 'full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part ot' this specification, in which- Figure l represents a side view of the machine. Fig. 2 represents vertical sections through machine; Fig. 3, a view of the jaw zdetaehed.

The object of this invention is the construction of some simple apparatus by which the anchor can be hung to the cat-heads, and instantaneouslylet go when necessary, and avoiding all the principal objections to any of the machinery now in use for that purpose.

A is a plate or box with a semicircular hollow, B, expanded or beveled from the center toward both ends, and corresponding` to a similar hoflow in the cap C, so that when the box A and the cap C are placed together with the grooves opposite one another, a circular hole, D, is formed, contracted in the center and gradually expanding toward each extremity. E E are semicircular projections of the box A, with holes F F, through which a pin, G, passes, securing the cap C to the plate or box A.

O is a cap-piece, (with the semicircular hollow H, before referred to,) having at one extremity a knob, K, with a hole through the center to admit the pin G, andv ibrming a hinge, by which the cap C opens and closes upon the box or plate A. L is an oblong projection upon the plate A, of equal thickness with the cap C, with a hole toward the larger extremity, through which the screw-bolt M passes, fastening the lever N to the plate or box A, and secured by a check-nut, O.

rIlhe box A is counterbored to admit the bolt M, the full size of the iron above the thread, the hole in the plate being tapped.

The check-nut O on the end of the bolt preyents the bolt from turning when the machine 1s 1n use.

Nis a lever, working upon the screw-bolt M with a circular motion, projecting at one end some distance beyond the box A, and at the other sufficiently long to keep the cap C securely closed upon the box A. P P P P I P are bolt-holes, by which the box A can be bolted either to the starboard or port cat-head, and on either side ot' either cat-head. R is a pin expanding from the center outward, and fitting into the hole D, so that when the cap C is shut down and closed by the lever N it is secured.

At one extremity is attached a chain of unlimited length. When the anchor is hauled up to the bows the pin It is placed in the hole D. Its cap C is then closed and made secure by moving the lever N to a position parallel with the sides of the .plate or box A. The chain is then passed through the anchor-ring and attached to a block and tackle, or any Other apparatus by which the anchor is swung over to the cat-head, and the chain is then belayed and made secure. The outer end of the lever may be kept in position by a catch.

When the anchor is to be let go, raiseor lower the lever N, and the cap C will at once open, allowing the pin It to slip out and free the anchor from the cat-head. This machine, for which a patent is sought by me, may be made of any suitable material, and maybe adjusted to either cat-head and upon either side, the hole D being beveled toward both ends and the lever N working both ways.

With the foregoing description of my invention, to which I have given the nalne of the Barker Marine Oat-Head Stopper, and the peculiar operation of the same, I beg to state that I disclaim all other forms now in use.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Iatent- Y The novel combination ot' the box A, the cap C, (working on the hinge made by knob K,) the projection E and the pin G, the lever N, secured to box A by screw-boltM, and the pin R, fitting into the hole D, all working together substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
