Description

F. H. TROVILLE.
PatentedSept. 7, 1915.
COLUMBIA PLANOORAPH FREDERICK H. TROVILLE, OF. SOUTH HERO, VERMONT.
CRADLE-BIT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. "Z, 1915.
' Application filed April 15, 1914. Serial No. 832,078.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. THO VILLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Hero, in the county of Grand Isle and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cradle-Bits, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a cradle bit in which two bit bars are mounted to lie normally closely adjacent each other in the animals mouth, and are so connected that when the reins are drawn in to guide or curb the animal the one is separated from the other.
A further object is to provide a bit having cheek pieces joined together by a bit-bar to be connected withthecheek straps of a driving bridle, and a curb bit mounted to lie adjacent to, and parallel with the bit-bar, and capable of being swung from itsadjacent position.
With other objects in view, which will be referred to, mv invention consists in the peculiar combination and novel arrangement of parts, such as will be hereinafter. more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the a ended claims.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the improved bit showing the manner of attaching with the bridle and of attaching the rein. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the bit with the operative position of the curb-bit-bar indicated in dotted line.
The bit structure comprises cheek pieces 1 and 2 joined together by a bridle bit-bar 3 connected at one of its ends with each of said check pieces, and these cheek pieces 1 Y and 2 are each provided at their upper ends with the loops 4 and 5 through which the cheek straps 6 and 7 of the bridle are connected.
Links 8 and 9 are pivoted by the rivet or pin 10 and 11 to each of the cheek pieces 1 and 2 at a point preferably below the connection of the bridle bit-bar 3, and these links are connected near their approximate center by a curb bit-bar 12 which is preferably of a smaller diameter than the bridle bit-bar 3.
The check pieces 1 and 2 have loops 18 and 1 1 provided on their free ends, strap slots 15 and 16 are provided on the free end of the links 8 and 9, and the driving reins 17 and 18 are passed through these loops 13 and 1 1 and are connected through the slots 15 and 16. The cheek pieces 1 and 2 have openings 19 and 20 provided therethrough adjacent the bridle bit-bar 3 through which an (glverdraw check may beconnected if desire As stated, the bit is connected with the bridle by passing the cheek straps 6 and 7 through the loops 4: and 5 of the cheek pieces 1 and 2, and the reins are connected with the links 8 and 9 by which the curb bit-bar 12 is carried. With the parts connected in this manner the bit is inserted in the horses mouth and, by reason of the fact that the. horse closes his teeth down upon the bit bars 3 and 12, these bars will occupy the relative position shown in Fig. 2 in full lines. When a pulling pressure is exerted on the reins 17 and 18 they will be drawn through the loops 13 and 1 1 and-the links 8 and 9 and consequently the curb bit-bar 12 will be movedto the position indicated in dotted-line in Fig. 2, thus opening the mouth of the horse so that the bit bars will be more effective against the tender part thereof.
.From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided a cradle bit which might be said to have a double purchase, and the parts of which are so arranged that the possibility of the animal gripping the bit between its teeth and thus preventing contact with the tender parts of the mouth is absolutely preeluded.
While I have herein shown and described one specific form of my invention, it will be understood that slight changes might be made in the form and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to be limited thereto except for such limitations as the claims may import.
I claim 1. Abit comprising elongated cheek pieces, a bridle bit bar rigidly connected between said cheek pieces near one end thereof to join and hold said pieces in a spaced relation, links connected at their one end pivotally with each of said cheek pieces in the body portion thereof, a curb bit bar connected between said links, rein loops on the free end of said cheek pieces through which the reins are passed, and loops on said links in which the reins are secured after passage through said rein loops on the cheek pieces.
2. bit comprising elongated curved cheek 7 pieces, a bridle bit bar connected across said cheek pieces near one end thereof to join the same in a rigid and spaced relation, links connected at their one end with each of said cheek pieces in the body portion, a bridle bit bar rigidly connected between said links in a proximate center thereof, rein loops formed on the free end of said cheek pieces through which the reins are adapted to be threaded and have sliding movement, and loops provided on the free end of said links to have the reins secured therethroug-h.
3. A bit comprising cheek pieces made crescent shape in side elevation and provided at their ends with oppositely disposed loops, a bridle 'bit'bar connected to join said cheek pieces near the upper end thereof, a link pivoted at its one end near the center of each of said cheek pieces, and a curb bit bar connected between said links to normally lie' adjacent said bridle bit bar and to be capable of movement from the adjacent position. I v p a 4. A bit comprising cheek pieces made crescent shape in side elevation'and provided at each of their ends with a loop, a bridle bit bar rigidly connected between said tion, a link pivoted at the end thereof to join and hold the pieces in a spaced relation, a link pivoted at the end thereof to each of said cheek pieces near the center, a curb bit bar rigidly connected between said links, and loops provided on the free end of said links beyond the mounting of the curb bit bar.
5. A bit comprising cheek pieces made crescent shape in side elevation and provided at each of their ends with a loop, a bridle bit-bar connected to join said cheek pieces near the upper ends thereof, a link pivoted to each cheek piece near the center thereof, and a curb bit-bar connected-betweenxsaid links, the loops of the upper ends of the cheek pieces adapted to have the cheek straps of the bridle connected therewith and the loops on the free ends of the cheek pieces to have the reins passed therethrough and connectedwith the free ends of the links.
6. A bit bar comprising cheek pieces made crescent shape in side elevation, a bridle bit bar rigidly connected between said cheek pieces near the upper ends thereof to join and hold thesepieces inthe proper spaced relation, a link pivoted to each cheek piece near the center thereof and the pivots of the links located at one end, a curbbit bar rigidly connected between said links in the body portion thereof, loops formed through the upper end of said check pieces and through said links to receive the cheek straps of the bridle and the ends of the reins respectively, and oppositely disposed loops provided on the lower end of the cheek pieces through which the reins are threaded and have sliding movement.-
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
