JOHN P. WALSH, OF NEW YORK,'N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HENRY J. McG-UCKIN,
I OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HEADLIGHT FOR AUTOMOBILES AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. '7, 1915.
Application filed June 17, 1914, Serial No. 845,637. Renewed August 2, 1915. Serial No. 43,340.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN P. WALSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New. York and 1 same.
\ curin This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in head-lights and has for its primary object to provide a form of head-light which will be constructed in such manner that the usual glare will be eliminated and the head-light may be employed upon automobiles, motorcycles, ships or in fact wherever it is desired to use a head-light or any powerful reflected light.
This invention has for another object to provide a head-light of this character in which the lens will be of improved construction and formed in such manner that a translucent liquid may be placed therein to soften the rays of light from the head-light and thereby do away with the blinding glare common with various forms of head-lights.
The invention has for another object to provide a head-light of this character in which the lens will be formed in such manner that it may be readily secured in position and the translucent liquid placed therein without .removing said lens.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved and novel means for sethe hollow lens to the door of the headight casin or body and forming an airtight connectlon between said lens and oor.
The invention has for a still-further object to generally improve and simplify the construction of devices of this character and increase the eificiency-thereof without mate rially increasing the cost of the same.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certam novel features of constructlon, comblnation and arrangement of parts as w1ll be claimed.
For a complete understanding ofmy invention, reference is to be had to the followtant 'more fully; described and.
ing description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete device, Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of the clamping ring, showing the upper portion thereof, and Fig. i3 is a transverse horizontal section of the ens.
Referring in detail to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the body, 2 the lamp, 3 the reflector and 4 the door of a search light. The door 4 is secliied in closed position, by the usual hinge pins 9 removably engaged in the registering hinge eyes 10 carried by said body 1 and 'door 4. The
construction and arrangement of these parts,
however, may be readily varied, as desired, as they do not constitute the most imporart of my invention. I wish to call especlal attention to the construction of the lens and the manner in which the same is secured in POSltiOIlyhOWGVGI', as will now be clearly and fully described.
The lens 11 is held against the inner face of the front or main portion 8 of the door 4 along the central opening thereof, by'means of the clampingring 14 which is also secured to the inner face of the main or front portion 8 of the door 4 and has an oifset portion 15 engaged over said flange 12 of the lens 11 to securely fasten said lens 11 against the inner face of the door 4 and prevent movement of said lens. The lens 11 is also rovided with a filling neck 16 which, when t e lens 11' is in proper position, ex-
tends above the center of the door 4 where- ,by. the hollow lens. 11 may be readily filled with a translucent liquid of any desired color. The filling neck 16 is closed by a suitable cap 17 threaded upon its upper extremity and the securing ring 14 has an off-1 set collar portion 18 at its upper side for engagement around the fillin 'neck 16 in orderthat the main portion 0 the securing ring 14 may be retained in proper position.
By referring to Fig.3, it will be readily seen that the hollow central or body portion of the lens 11 is of such form that the sides thereof have concentric convex sur faces and a solid peripheral flange is formed around said hollow central or body portion of the lens and numbered 12, said flange being previously referred to and describedwith the function of said flange fully set forth. It will be understood, however, that the shape of the body or central hollow portion of the lens, may be changed, if desired,
and also the shape of the flange may be varied if deemed advisable.
Many minor changes in the details of construction, however, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrific- 10 ing any of the advantages thereof.
- What is claimed is The combination with a door; of a lens positioned in said door and having a solid peripheral flange engaged against the inner 15 face of said door, the central portion of said lens being hollow and offset from the flange, the sides of the central portion of said lens having concentric convex surfaces, said lens having a filling opening communicating with the hollow central portion thereof, and securing means carried by said door and engaged with said solid peripheral flange to retain said lens in position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN P, WALSH.
