To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. PERsoNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented .certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in lamps, the present embodiment being particularly designed and adapted for use in connection with automobile lamps, and relates to improved means for preventing the glare of headlights and search lights used in connection with motor vehicles. v
The primary object of the invention is to provide an improved intercepting or shading medium or agent adapted to intercept certain rays of light between the source of illumination and certain reflecting portions of the reflector therebypreventing the glare arising from this portion of the reflector ordinarily due to the direct reflection of such light as becomes the upwardly projecting rays in the field ,of illumination. The
present embodiment, at the same time, permits of the direct and effective passage of the downwardly reflected or projected rays of light for illuminating the roadway and directly reflected from the upper portions of the reflector.
With the above mentioned and other ends in View, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangment, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended clalm.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional View of a lamp reflector equipped with an incandescent lamp bulb embodying my invention. Fig. 2,

In carrying my invention into efl'ect in connection with an ordinary incandescent filament, 3, and lamp bulb 4, I provide the lower portion or half of the bulb 4, with a suitable translucent shading or intercepting agent 2, this shadin or intercepting medium being preferably 0 a suitable color, such as ruby red, or the like, adapted to absorb and break up the rays of light as well as'shade the part or portion 1, of the reflector in such a manner as to prevent a glare. erably first ground on its exterior to provide a roughened and irregular surface to better receive and carry the coloring material. If desired, the intercepting or shading medium 2, may be extended to form an annular extension 2, about the base of the bulb as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
Upon reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings,
it will be seen that only the upwardly extending rays oflight are permitted to directly strike against and be reflected by the upper portion of the reflector and these rays of light are thence refracted and projected into downwardly and forwardlyextending rays of light to become the lower portion of the projected fi'eldto illuminate the roadway while the upper rays of light are broken'up or difi'used and the lower portion 1, of the reflector is thus deprived of its glaring propconnection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages and operation of my invention will be readily understood. Having thus described one of the embodiments of my invention, what I claim and 5 desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
