To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, MARTIN C. MCKEN- NEY, VVILLIAM H. SWAN,` and FRANK J.
PnAcocx, all citizens of the United States,
residing at San Bernardino, in the county of San Bernardino and State of California, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Churns, of which the following is a specification.
This Invention relates to improvements pertaining to they sanitary kchurn patented The accompanying` drawings illustrate the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved churn ready for use. Fig. 2 is a broken axial sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a view of one of the end supports detached. Fig. t is anenlarged view of one of the journal `boxes detached.
The end members kor supports 1, 2 of the stand are duplicates, each being constructed of strap iron or the like bent sidewise at the ends to form feet 3 that may have holes 4L therein to receive fasteners, not shown, and bent edgewise at the middle to form' journal box supports 5 pierced with holes 6 to re* ceive rivets 7 which fasten journal boxes S, 8', to the journal box supports. Each journal box comprises a tubular portion 9 and lug 10, said lug being flat to'fit against the strap and pierced with holes 11'correspendingv to the holes 6 in the bendof the strap. r he flat lug 10 is spaced from the inner end of the box a distance slightly lgreater than the thickness of the end support so that when the flat lug is riveted or otherwise fastened to the outer face of the end support, the box will project slightly beyond the inner face of such support. The journal boxes are alined with each other and are duplicates excepting that the outer end of one of said boxes is provided with a notch 14; to receive a pin 15 to fasten the vent tube 16 in place to keep it from turning.
The swing is composed of a strap bent to form a bottom piece 1,7, and side pieces havving vstraight lower limbs 18, an outward bend 19 and straight uppernlimbs 20; said upper limbs being provided near said outward bends with outwardly extending tubular journals 21, 22; one of said journals 21 havingan outwardly extending tubular portion 23 and being transversely pierced at 24 to receive a pin l25 to fasten in said journal the axis of a crank 26 which has a hole`27 corresponding with the hole 24: of the journ'the otherY journal 22, the bore 28 extending axially therethrough and through the upper limb 2O of the swing is Vf o'r the purpose ofreceiving the straight limb 29 of the vent tube 16 which is provided with a flange 30 to contact with one or more .washersl of suitable solid material to compress` al yielding gasket 32, preferably made of sponge rubber, against the inside of the container 33 which is preferablya glass ar provided inside above its center of gravity with a socket formed by an outwardly extending boss 3% pierced with a hole 35 through which the stnaight limb 29 of the vent tube may be inserted from the inside of Ysaid jar and thence through the tubular journal box 22. Said socket serves as a seat for the gasket 32 so as to hold the limb 29 of the vent tube against the shifting relative to the axis of the boss. the glass cover is placed on the top of they gasket, the bail is then brought into aline-v ment with the swing and the thumb screw v4O`-is vthen screwed down onto the knob 41 of the cover, thus to not only compress the gasket but also yto put the sides of the bail vand vthe swing under a tension that springs the upoer ro'ections .of the swin inward until the lower ends of the bail where they are pivoted tov ysuch upper projections press irmly but resiliently against the sides of the jar, thus iirmly holding lthe'jar frictionf tight in thev swing and 'relieving the v-boss from any strain thereon other than the yieldingpressure ofthe gasket, the hole through the boss being of greater diameter than the'vent tube so that the boss 'does not touch the vent tube but is pressed by the rubber against the upper straight'limb of the swing. The crank being fastened in place by its pin may then be turned, thereby rotating the swing and bail and the con? tainer, care being taken that the rotation be sufciently slow to allow the milk to fall lfrom end to endv of the container at each, half revolutior'i.A By turning the crank for about twelve minutes, more or less, the
