UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PERRY H. SHUMWAY, OF OORRY, PENNSYLVANIA.
DEVICE FOR SHAKING CRATED BOTTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 493,046, dated March 7, 1893.
Application filed October 15, 1892- Serial No. 449,018. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PERRY H. SHUMWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corry, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Shaking Grated Bottles; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for mixing carbonated beverages.
In preparing carbonated beverages for the market the proper quantity of the desired sirup is placed in a bottle which is then filled With carbonated water. The bottles are then thoroughly shaken to intimately mix the sirup and carbonated water therein. This shaking has heretofore been done exclusively by hand and required the services of several attendants as only one bottle could be shaken at a time.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple apparatus adapted to holdacrate containing a number of bottles and to be operated so as to thoroughly mix the contents of said bottles.
With these ends in view, my invention consists of a revoluble frame or receptacle adapted to surround and support a bottle holding crate.
My invention further consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully pointed out and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure l is a perspective view of my improved apparatus; and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the same.
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings, referring to which- A designates a crate provided with a series of interior division Walls or partitions to provide a series of compartments each designed to receive and snugly hold a bottle. The
crate Ais arranged within a frame composed of the parallel sides B and a series of transverse connecting slats 0 connecting said side pieces B at the lower edges thereof. The crate A rests on the transverse slats O and over the top of said crate is placed a removable cover D, the upper surface of which is flush with the upper edges of the sides B of the frame. held firmly in place by a transverse locking rod or bar E. The rod or barE extends across the cover D and upper edges of the sides B and near its ends is bentdownwardly so as to extend along the outer surface of said'sides the extreme ends of said rod being bent at right angles to the length of the downwardly extending piston thereof to extend under projecting pins or studs F attached to the sides B. Any movement of the lid-or cover D is prevent-ed by the rod or bar E.
'To the sides B are rigidly attached trunnions H which fit in suitable bearings formed in a supporting frameKand one of said trunnions is provided at its outer end with a suitable crank or handleL by means of which the frame and crate can be rotated and the contents of the bottle in the crate thoroughly mixed.
The operation of my invention is as follows: A number of bottles filled with carbonated water and a suitable quantity of flavoring sirup are placed in the crate A which is then placed in the revoluble frame. The lid or cover D is secured in position by the locking rod E and the frame is then rotated to thoroughly mix the contents of the bottles in the crate carried thereby. By removing the lid OPCOVBI D the crate A can.
be readily removed from the frame and another crate substituted or the crate can remain in the frame and the bottles be removed therefrom.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An apparatus for shaking crated bottles consisting of a supporting frame, a revoluble frame, composed of parallel side pieces which are connected at their ends and lower edges and each of which is provided with a laterally projecting trunnion adapted to fit in Said removable cover or top is bearings formed in the supporting frame, Intestimony whereofIaflixmysignaturein said frame being adapted to receive a bottle presence of two witnesses. holding crate, and a removable cover adapted to be fitted between the parallel sides of PERRY H. SI-IUMWAY. 5 the revoluble frame and operate to hold a Witnesses:
bottle receiving crate in position therein,sub- THOMAS FERRIS, stantially as and for the purpose described. CLARENCE L. (JOVELL.
