'To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, ROB RT B.'GR1 E N WAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Bernardino, in the county of San Bernardino and State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Engineers Tool-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relatesto improvements in engineers tool boxes. v

The object of my invention is to provide a novel tool box particularly adapted for use by railway engineers, which is cheap to manufacture, will withstand rough usage, and which is provided with a receptacle for time tables and other papers, and which permits of the insertion and ready extraction of such papers, While at the same time serving to strengthen the cover of the box.

The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tool box with the cover shown in the open position. Fig. 2 is a reduced longitudinal vertical sectional view of the tool box with the cover shown in the closed position. Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.

The tool box is, preferably, of rectangular form, and is composed of sheet metal, preferably of sheet steel.

1 designates the ends of the body of the box, the upper edges of said ends being provided each with an inwardly extending flange 2, the upper side of which is convex.

3 and 4 designate respectively the front and rear sides of the'body, theupper edges of said sides being provided respectively .with inwardly turned flanges 5 and 6. The

ends of the body may be secured to the sides by riveting, spot welding or 'in any other well knownmanner. Pivoted to the upper end of the side 4 by hinges 7 is a cover comprising a lid8 and a longitudinal substantially flat brace plate 9. The lid Sis preferably a curved sheet metal plate having a co'ncave inner side which, when the cover is closed is adapted to receive the convex flanged upper ends of the ends 1 of the body. Each end of the lid '8 is provided with an inwardly turned flange 10, which overlaps the adjacent end 1 when the cover is closed. The longitudinaledges of the brace plate 9 are respectively held by flanges 11 formed by inwardly folding longitudinal edges of the lid 8. The brace plate 9 serves to stiffen the cover, and forms with the lid 8 a chamber having both ends open, which chamber serves as a receptacle for holding timetables and other papers. By having the ends of the chamber open, the time tables may be inserted therein from either end, and may be readily removed therefrom by insertion of a hand at one end of the chamber and forcing the papers out of the other end. Secured to the top of the lid 8 1s a longitudinally disposed curved handle 12. Secured to the free edge of the lid 8 is a hasp 13, the slot 14 of which is-adapted to receive a staple 15, which is secured to the side 3 of the body. To the staple 15 may be applied an ordinary padlock, not shown. By having the sides 3 and 4 provided with the .inwardly turned flanges 5 and 6, and by having the upper ends of the ends 1 convex and provided with the inwardly turned flanges 2, the body of the box is well adapted to resist strains due to supporting the box filled with tools by means of the handle 12. To the bottom 'of the .body of the box are secured longitudinal bars 16 which serve as runners, and prevent wear to the bottom of the box, which would otherwise occur due to the heavily loaded box being slid about upon its bottom. The bottom of the body may be provided with holes 17 to permit the escape of water which may he sometimes thrown upon the tools in the box to wash them off.

An engineers tool box comprising a rectangular body having ends convex at their upper ends, said convexends having each an inwardly turned flange, the upper end of each side of the body having an inwardly turned flange, and a cover comprising a curved lid hinged at one longitudinal edge to one side of the body and having a concave under side, which, in the closed position, receives the flanges of the ends of the body, each end of the lid having an inwardly turned flange, which overlaps the adjacentend of the body when the lid is closed, the longitudinal edges of the lid beforming withthe lid a chamber having an open end.
