Specification of Letters Patent,
Patented June 2 53 @215,
Application filed an; 5, 1913. Serial no. 777,525.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATALIEMARJOBIE BARLET, a citizen of the Unitedjstates, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the fol- 4 lowing is a specification;
v r The main object of the resent invention is the provision in anartic eof this class of a seamless and; waterproof; crotch: section, serving to protect'the outer clothing against stains without adding in any way to'the discomfort of the wearer.
A further obj ect'is the construction. of the leg portions with the provision'of' means, such as tying tapes or: ribbons, whereby the article is adjustable to practicallyany size, an elastic waist band compensatingfor different sizes at that point.
In manufacturing articles of this kind it has been found practically impossible to have them absolutely waterproof, owing to the necessity of havin'gseam's and consequently needle holes "in" the crotch portlon of the garment and a resultant leaky construction if the'seams are stripped it adds too greatly to the bulk of the garment. The present invention is designed to directly avoid these objections, and at the same time reduce the cost of manufacture, while providing a practically universally and automatically adjustable garment.
The invention in the preferred details of construction will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View illustrating the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the article, showing the same opened out, the waist band being omitted. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a broken perspective of a detail.
Referring the improved drawers may be sa d to cornprise a crotch section 1 and duplicate waist to the accompanying drawings,
sections 2. The crotch section is made of an unbroken or integral strip of appropriate material having its minimum width midway between the ends, or at the center portion 3 of the garment, and is gradually increased in width therefrom toward the ends L. The
portion of minimum width constitutes-the crotch portion ofthe garment, passing be- The waist sections 2, which are in efl'ect duplicates, preferably comprise panels 5 and def suitable fabric, secured in'end'wise' arrangement by stitching 7 uniting the overlapped. ends. The meeting edges of the panels constituting each waist section" are I cutaway fora portion of their lengths, so that when the panels are secured=-toget-her,
an approximately \l-shaped opening 8 is formedcentrally of the upper edge of the section. The lower edges of the completed waist sectionsare secured to the upper edges 'of thefront and rear ortions of the crotch section, the meeting ed crotch 3 sections being preferably slightly ges of the" waist and curved to'insure a more comfortable fit.- As
thus constructed the side edges of the crotch and waist sections are free "of' connection' with "each other throughout their entlre lengths, the openings thus provided constituting leg openings; The" upper 'dges of the waist sections are lapped and stitched to provide draw-bands 9 in which is slidably arranged an elastic strip 10. strip extends through the band of both waist sections, being terminally connected to the rear waist section immediately adjacent and on each side of the opening 8 therein. The band or strip 10 thus unites the otherwise unconnected front and rear portions of the garment into garment-forming relation, and constitutes the sole connection between the parts above the central portion. The
leg openings thus extend practically throughout the full length of the garment, and as a means for adjustably closing them to accord with the comfort and convenience of th wearer, I secure tapes 11 to the edges of the leg openings at the juncture of the leg and waist sections, which tapes'may be tied in the usual manner to reduce the size The of the leg openings, as may be desirable. The edges of the leg openings below the tapes are provided with panel strips 12, which increase the width of the garment at this point, and may if desired have an edge ornamentation, as shown.
As a salient and important feature of the present invention I treat the fabric forming the crotch section to waterproof the inner surface thereof, or more correctly form the crotch section of fabric which has one or both surfaces waterproofed, and arrange such fabric so that one such surface, as 13, constitutes the inner surface of the crotch section. This waterproof section is integral, wholly without seams, except at the ends and edges, and presents an unbroken, non-leaking protection throughout, particularly in the crotch where it is most needed. All seams at the crotch are avoided, hence needle holes and consequent liability of leakage cannot result. Any possibility of stains passing through the garment as thus constructed is obviated by this construction, and this together withthe universal adjustment previously described renders the garment admirably adapted for the use intended.
Secured to the garment on the line uniting the leg and waist sections are loops 14, designed to serve as a means for attaching the usual pad or napkin in place. The pad is thus properly positioned with relation to the waterproof section at all times, so as to secure the most effective results from the latter. The V-shaped opening 8 of the rear waist section is provided with a loop and button connection 15 to unite said'edges after the garment is in place, thereby se curing more or less tension on the strip 10 to hold the garment in place.
The improvement provides a garment for staining of outer garments.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
As an article of manufacture, a device of the title described, including a water-proof member, in outline, flaring from a central narrow crotch portion, waist-panel. forming members applied to the upper flared ends of said water-proof member, tying tapes interposed between said Water-proof member and said waist-panel forming members, the
upper edges of said waist-panel forming members having draw bands containing a slidable elastic member, the front waistpanel forming members having a separable connection therebetween, and lateral panelstrips applied to the edges of said waterproof member, said lateral panel strips having outer edge upwardly flared formations and central constricted crotch portions.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence oftwo Witnesses.
