CAR-FRAMEWORK.
T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD PossoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Framework, of which the following is a speciiication;4
The principal object of my invention is to provide a new and improved underframe for cars.
Another object is to provide a cast steel end sill of new and'improvedconstruction.
Still another object is to providea cast steel end sill in combination with other elements of the car framework.
With these and other objects in view, all of which will be more readily apparent in the following specification, the invention consists of the combination of elements stated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one specic embodiment of my invention which is at present the form preferred by me.
Figure 1 is a perspective view partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a detail shown in operative relation to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view corresponding to the right-hand portion of Fig. 1, but having certain parts assembled, which are not shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional perspective view showing certain elements in operative relation to Fig. 3. Fig.l

The end sill 15 is a hollow casting, its section being shown in Fig. 4. The front and rear Walls of this hol ow casting converge toward the ends. From its front face the various webs or flanges 16, 17, 18, project forwardly and are disposed so as to form the guiding sockets 1 9 and 20 for the stems that support the platform extension 22. The stem 24 is shown in Figs. 2 and 5 and is adapted to engage the socket 20. The platform extension 22 has a bufer plate 23 which is adapted to co-act with a corresponding member on the opposed car. The plate 21 is attached to the sill 15 and overhan s the extension member 22.

of the end wall frame of the car. Angle p1eces 28 are riveted to the sill 15 and also-to the lower ends of the verti :al channel beams 29 to which the end wall of the car is attaohed.
The center sill is of the box girder type having two parallel longitudinal plates 31 each in a vertical plane, overlaid by a horizontal plate 30. Angle irons 32 are riveted to the lower edges of the plate 31. The forward ends 39 of the plates 31 are shaped as shown 1n Fig. 6 and project under the end sill 15. Integral lugs 46 project rearwardly from the end sill and are riveted to the end of the center sill plates 3l. In addition to the center sill there are intermediate sills 33, each consisting of a channel beam. At their ends they are attached to the rearwardly projecting lugs 49 of the end sill 15, as shown in Fig. 4.
The gusset plate 34 forms a diagonal brace fitting into the corner between the end sill 15 and the side sill, which will be described presently. There is a recess 48, as shown in Fig. 4, on the top of the plate 47 (which is an integral part of the end sill 15) into which this gusset plate 34 is adapted to fit. The sheet iron end wall of the car is desighated by the reference numeral 35 in Fig. 3.
The side sill comprises the plate 36 lying in a vertical plane and having an angle iron 37 attached to its lower edge and a Z-bar 38 overhanging its upper edge. The forward end 43 of the plate 36 lies against the transverse web 55 at the end of the end sill 15 and is overlaid by the vertical corner angle iron 41, as shown in Fig. 3. This angle iron 41 has a channel beam 40 riveted thereto and is braced by a diagonal gusset plate 42. A step 45 is attached to the corner of the car frame, as shown in Fig. 3.
The eyes 52 for safety chains are at the ends of the short plates 51 adapted to be bolted to the end sill on its under face. For greater security they have hooks 53 at their rear ends.
The drawbar support 40 is shown in Fig. 5.`
It will be seen that the structure which has just been described is adapted to full .the objects stated at the beginning of the specification. The end sill itself as well as in combination with the other elements of the car framework, is unusually strong for the amount of material employed. In addition to this advantage of great strength the framework described is easy to build and not likely to get out of order.
I claim:
1. A car frame co-mprising a hollow cast steel end sill rectangular in cross section and having its upper horizontal wall projecting inwardly beyond its inner vertical wall, side sills having their ends attached to the ends of the end sill, diagonal gusset plates attached tothe projecting portion of said horizontal wall of the end sill and to said side sills, and lugs on said center sill lying wholly beneath said projecting portion of the horizontal wall.
2. A car frame comprising a hollow cast steel end sill, the top thereof being extended earwardly, in combination with a center sill comprising a horizontal top plate with its end projecting under said rearward top plate of the end sill and riveted thereto.
3. A Vcar frame comprising a cast steel end sill with the rearwardly overhanging projection 47, and the rearward lug 46 lying wholly beneath said overhanging projection in combination with a center sill having the forward projection 39 extending beneath said end sill.
4. A car frame comprising a cast steel end sill having an inwardly overhanging proj ection, a center sill having its end beneath said projection and-secured to said Vend sill, a side sill secured to the end of said end sill, a horizontal plate overlying and secured to said center sill'alnd to said overhanging projection, and a horizontal gusset plate secured to said side sill and to said projection.
A'car framework, a hollow cast steel end sill of rectangular cross section vhaving its upper wall projecting inwardly beyond the body of said end sill, said end sill having a transverse web on its end to receive the end of a side sill, a side sillhaving its end secured to said web, a diagonal gusset plate across the side sill and end sill and attached to the projecting portion of said Wall and to the top of said side sill, and a center sill secured to said projection and projecting for-V wardly beneath the bod)7 of said end sill. n
