To all whom it may concern:
to it known that l, Gannon ll. Gimmn, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, lrlinnesota, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Draft-Sills, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact- (lescription, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the amaonipanying drawings, forming part of this specitication, in which Figure 1 is a top plan-view of a pair of my improved draft sills, the same being applied to. a pair of center sill nienil'iers and a portion of the body holster and end sill of the niuierfraine shown. in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2- -2- ol Fig. 1. Fig. 3 a front elevation of the draft sills in position for use. Fig. l. is a transverse section taken on the line- 4-4: of Fig. i. This invention relates generally to car anto cast. metal draft sills, which extend from the rear side of the end sill of an underfranie, rear- Wardly across the top of the body holster to a point considerably to the rear of said body bolster, and which draft sills are rigidly fixed. to and serve as extensions for the shortened center sills of the iiiulerfranie.
The principal objects of my invention are to provide simple, ii'iexpensive east metal draft sills. which :an he rear lily applied to the ninlerl'ranie; to provide simple draft sills to which the draft ringing ran he read ily applied. and to provide strong and du ralile construction whit-h ean lie advantageously used to replace (lania ied wooden center sills on old cars; and to serve, as portions of the center sills of new cars.
'To the. above purposes my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arranqenient of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 1. indicates the longitudinally disposed center sills of the 'ar underframe, 2 the end sill. 3 the cast metal. body holster, 4+ the draw har and the draft rio ing, all of which parts are of well known wnstruction.
My improved draft sills, as shown, are fixed to the center sills 1 and extend from thence to the endsill 2, over the bolster 2) and serve as a support. for the ends of the follower plates of the draftrigging 5, and each sill is substantially L shaped in cross section, and comprises a vertically disposed web 6, and a horizontally disposed bottom flange 7. The rear portions of the webs 6 and the flanges 7 engage respectively against the inner and under faces of the center sills 1, as shown in Figs. land 7, and, by means of bolts 8 passing through said webs and flanges and the center sills, the draft sills are rigidly fixed to said center sills. The ends of the center sills 1 bear directly against vertically disposed plates 9, which are formed integral with the draft sills adjacent theirrear ends, and formed integral with the forward ends of said sills are vertieallydisposed plates 10, which bear di rectly against, and are fixed to, end sill 2. Lugs ll are formed on the front faces of these plates ll), and are seated in correspond ing recesses formed in the rear side of the end sill.
Formed integral with the upper edge of the vertical web 6 of each draft sill is a horizontally disposed, longitudinally extending flange 12, and a corresponding. flange it) is formed integral with the lower edge of the web (3. which flange 13 preferably occupies the same horizontal plane with the llanpge 7.
Formed integral with the outer face of the web (3., and extending from the plate 9 t0 the plate i is a horizontally disposed flange H. which materially strengthens the central poition of the draft sill, and serves as a support for a wooden filler block 15, to which the car flooring ltiis fixed.
The horizontally disposed flanges 7 and if, bear directly upon the top plate of the bolster 3, and the draft sills are detachably fixed to said bols er by means of blocks 17 applied to the underside of the draft sills, and which blocks are held in place byineans of bolts 18, or like fastening devices. The forward ends of these blocks are provided with lips 19, which engage beneath the edges of the top plate of the bolster, and the rear ends of these. blocks bear directly against transversely disposed-lugs 20 formed integral with the tinder-side of the flanges 7 and 13. Draft sills of my improved construction are comparatively simple, andinexpensive, can be readily applied for use, for a very strong and rigid construction between the center sills, the bolster and end sill and said draft sills can be utilized in connection with damaged wooden center sills of old cars, as well as upon the ends of the center sills of new cars.
It will be readily understood that minor changes in the construction and arrangement of parts of my improved draft'sills may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim,
1. In a car underframe, a pair of independent draft sills overlying and fixed to the body bolster of the underframe, transverse plates on the rear portions of said draft sills against which the ends of the center sills of the carunderframe engage, transverse plates on the forwardends of the draft sills, which last mentioned plates bear against-the inner face of, the end sill of the car underframe, lugs on said last mentioned plates, which lugs engage in recesses in the end sil1,'a spacing block between the central portions of the draft sills, and fastening deward end of the draftsill, which plate engages the inner face of the nnderframe end vices seated in said draft sills and the spacing block.
Th'e'hereindescribeddraft sill comprising an elongated flanged member adapted to overlie a car under-frame body bolster, the rear end of which draft sill is adapted to engage and be fixed to one of the underframe center sills, a plate integral with the for position by transversely tioned plates,

3. In a car underframe, a pair of independent draft sills overlying and fixed ,to the body bolster of the car underframe, transversely disposed plates on the rear portions of said draft sills, which plates abut the ends of the center sills of the-under-' frame, transversely disposed plates on the forward ends of said draft sills, which last mentioned plates abutthe end sill of the car under-frame, horizontally disposed flanges on the draft sills, between the transversely disposed plates'and forwardly projecting lugs on the plates at the forward ends of the.
draftsills.

In a car underframe, a pair of inde pendent draft sills overlying and fixed tothe body bolster of the underframe, transverse plates on the rear portions of said sills against which the ends of the center sills of the car underframe engage, transverse plates on the forward ends of the draft sills, which last mentioned plates bear against the rear faces of the end sill of the car under-frame, and lugs on said last menwhich lugs engage the recesses in the end sill.
The hereindescribed draft sill comprising an elongated member substantially L- shaped in cross section, a transverse plate formed on the rear portion of saiddraft sill against which the end of the center Slll engages, a transverse plate onthe forward end I of said member, which last mentioned plate abuts against the end sill of the car underframe, a lug on said last mentioned plate, which lug engages in a recess in the end sill, and a horizontally disposed flange on the body of the draft sill between the transversely disposed plates.

posed plate integral'with the forward endof said member for abutting the end sill ofthe car underframe, a forwardly-projecting lug on said plate, which lug is adapted to engage 1n a recess in the end sill, a trans versely disposed plate integral with the rear l portion of said draft sill for abutting the end of one of the center sills of the car underframe and a horizontall dis osed flan e integral with the draft sill and arranged between the transversely disposed plates.
