THILL SUPPORT. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 24. 1914.
Patented June 15, 1915.
4 Inventors Attorneys ALFRED H. LOFLAND AND CHARLES H. DAVIDSON, OF MILTON, DELAWARE; MARY E. DAVIDSON ADMINISTRATBIX 0F SAID CHARLES H. DAVIDSON, DECEASED.
I THILL-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 15, 1915.
Application filed June 24, 1914. Serial No. 847,095.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALFRED H. LOFLAND and CHARLES H. DAVIDSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Milton, in the county of Sussex, State of Delaware, have invented a new and useful Thill-Support, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to thill supports, one of its objects being to provide a simple, durable and compact structure which can be applied readily to thills already in use and which will operate to support a thill in raised position without necessitating the use of fastening devices such as commonly employed.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Fi ure 1 is a View partly in side elevation an partly in section of a portion of a thill having the present improvements combined therewith, the thill being shown in its lowered or active position. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the thill supported in raised position. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates an axle having the usual thill coupling 2 to which the thill 3 is attached. The bottom late 4 of the thill coupling is formed with an upwardly extending tongue 5 having a slot 6 for the reception of an eye 7 formed at the lower end of the rear member 8 of the support. This rear member is in the form of an elongated strip having a head 9 at its upper end formed by bending the strip to produce angularly disposed faces 10 and 11, the sides of the strip being bent forwardly to form flanges 12 which lap the head 9 and reinforce the entire member 8. An attaching plate 13 is secured to the thill 3 and has an eye 14 for the reception of an eye 15 formed at one end of the upper member of the support. This upper member, which has been indicated generally at 16, is formed of an elongated strip of spring metal folded at its center to form the eye 15 and having one end portion provided with depending side flanges 17, between which the head 9 of the member 8 extends. The two members 8 and 16 are held together by means of a pivot pin 18 extending through the flanges 12 and 17 as shown. The other end of the strip forming the member 16 is bowed to constitute a spring 19 and this spring bears with considerable pressure upon the head 9.
The spring is so positioned that when-the.
thill 3 is in its lowered or active position, the spring will bear downwardly on the surface. 10 of the head whereas, when the thill is swung upwardly to raised position, the spring 19 will bear upon the surface 11 of the head.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that whenever it is desired to support the thill in raised position, it is merely necessary to swing it upwardly. This will cause the upper member 16 to push rearwardly upon the lower member 8, causing said lower member to swing upon the tongue 5 and bring the surface 11 into engagement 1 with the spring 19. The spring 19 will bear downwardly on this surface with suflicient pressure to hold the thill elevated. By pulling downwardly on the thill, the member 16 will be caused to pull on the upper end of the member 8, thus shifting spring 19 from surface 11 to surface 10.
What is claimed is 1. A thill support including pivotally connected upper and lower members, said lower member having an angular head, a spring carried by the upper member and bearing against the angular head for holding the members in either of two angular positions,
means for pivotally connecting the lower lapping and pivotally connected to the as our own, We have hereto aflixed our sigflanges oi the other sitrip, the other end of natures in the presence of two Witnesses. 10 the said lolded strip orming a spring con- 1 stantly bearing against the head to hold the H 5 members in either of tWo angular positions, 1 and means engaging the eye 01": the folded Witnesses: strip for securing it to a thill. J OHN B. MUSTARD,
In testimony that We claim the foregoing JAMES C. CoNWnLL.
