UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WHIFFLETREE CONNECTION.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented June 26, 1906.
Application led September 6, 1905. Serial No. 277,154.
Be it known that I, JOHN I. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Novinger, in the county of Adair and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Whiffletree Connection, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to Whiffletree connections, and has for an object to provide a device embodying new and improved features of durability, eiiiciency, and sightliness.
A further object of the invention is to provide a whiietree connection embodying a plate secured to the pole-evener or cross-bar and provided with a segmental slot and a hook carried by the whiffletree for engagement within the slot.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vehicle-pole with the improved connection applied. Fig. 2 is a lan view of the parts disconnected and the W etree turned to show the reverse side. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the parts assembled and taken on lines 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse'sectional view of the connection as used for securing a whiffletree to the evener or cross-bar. Fig. 5 is a top View of a portion of the pole with the evener removed.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The improved whiffletree connection forming the subject-matter of this application is adapted for securing a whiffletree to an evener or cross-bar or an evener to a vehiclepole. It has been here shown as attachin a whiffletree, as 10, to an evener 11, and or securing the evener upon the pole 12, having the usual circle 13 and braces 14. In its preferred embodiment the connection comprises a plate 15, having a pivot-opening 16 and a segmental slot 17, arranged circumferentially to the opening 16. The plate has an extended end 18, which may be disposed along and secured to the pole, as in Figs. 2 and 3, or bent to embrace the evener, as in Fig. 4.
About the whifHetree or evener is secured the strip 19, terminating in the hooked section 20, engaged within the segmental slot 17, and disposed at the rearward side of the whiffletree or evener. Through the whiffletree or evener and through the openings 16 is disposed the pivot-pin 21, therebypivoting the whiiiietree or evener upon the plate 15, with hook 2O slidably mounted in slot 17. As an additional means for preventing rattling and especially adapted for the connectionbetween the evener and the pole a substantially crescent-sha ed keeper may be secured to the plate 15 orwardly of the evener and provided with a concave beveled edge 23, disposed circumferenti ally to the pivot-opening 16. A plate 24 is secured to the under side of the evener and has a lip at one end provided with a convex beveled edge 25, engaged by the beveled edge of the keeper 22. When used for securing a whiffietree upon an evener, the stri 19 may be provided with a loop 26, into w 'ch may be buckled a strap to connect with the circle 13 in the usual manner.V
From the foregoing description it is believed that the use, operation, and advantages of the improved whiffletree connection will be fully and clearly understood.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- A whiffletree connection comprising a plate having a pivot-opening therein and a slot concentric with the opening, a whiffletree, a pivot extending through the pivot-opening and the whifiietree, a strip embracing and secured to the whiffletree and terminating in a hook slidably mounted in the slot, a wearplate secured to the whiffletree and bearing upon the slotted plate, said wear-plate having a li projecting from one edge thereof and beyon the whiiiletr'ee, the end of the lip be- IOO ing convex and beveled, and e substantially crescent-shaped keeper secured upon the slotted plate and extending beyond the edges thereof, one edge of the keeper being concave and beveled to overlap the beveled Witnesses:
