Description

W. C. HELCHER.
COMBINED JAR CLOSURE AND CAP EXTRACTOR.
APPLICATION FILED APH.24. 1914. v
I PatentedJune 8, 1915.
, a W Zb'ivbm az'zam m WILLIAM C. HELCHER, OF GALIQN, OHIO.
COMBINED JAR-CLOSURE AND- CAF-EXTRAC'IOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM 0. Hammer:
, of Ohio, have invented certain new and use-,
Eul Improvements in Combined Jar-Closures and CapsEXtract-ors, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to a combined jar closure and cap extractor particularly adapted for use in connection with milk ars.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including a closure which may be used to seal the milk jar after the cap has been removed, and to also provide a cap engaging member which is detechably secured to the closure. p
A further object of the invention is to provide a closure carrying a detachable cap engaging member which may be formed of suitable sheet metal and which may be readily attached to or detached from the closure.
The invention has as a further object to provide a combined jar closure and cap extractor so eonstructed that the cap engaging member may be caused to pierce the cap of a jar upon application of the closure to the jar, and upon rotation of the closure may be caused to so engage the cap as to readily eii'eot its remgval from the jar upon the removal of the closure. And a still further object of the invention is to generally iin prove the construction and increase the eifi ciency of devices of the above descri character.
With these and other objects in view my invention will be more fullydesnribed, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically pointed out in the claims which are attached to and form a part of this application.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view showing my impr0ved3'ar closure and cap extractor applied to the rim of an ordinary milk jar, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device, Fig. 3
is a detail perspective view of the cap engaging member, and Fig. 4 1s a transverse.
sectional view taken on the line of Fig ii, and especially showing the disposition pf the cutting edges formed on the'head of the cap engaging member.
I, Corresponding and like parts are referred Specification of Letters Patent.
toin the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters. U,
My improved device is especially adapted for use iii-connection with milk jars and in eludes a .closurefor the jar which carries a cap engaging member adapted to effect the removal of the ordinary paper cap as commonly used to close such jars for transpor tation, 1 1 Referring more particularly to the draw ings, the numeral 10 indicates the neck of an ordinary milk jar in which is positioned the usual cap or disk 11.
Coming now to the subject of the present invention, my improved device includes a closure 12 which is preferably formed of suitable sheet metal and is provided with a depending peripheral flange-13 adapted to engage over the outer walls of the neck 10 to close the jar. Secured to the closure 12 centrally thereof is a handle knob 14:. Such knob may be formed of wood or any'other suitablematerial and is centrally bored to receive a bolt 15 which extends through the closure 12 and is connected thereto by a nut I 16, screw threaded upon the extremity of Patented June 1915. Application filed A ril at, 1914. Serial no. wiser.
the bolt. Mounted upon the inner extremity ofthe'bolt 15 interiorly of the closure 12 is i a cap engaging member 17. Such member is preferably formed ,fromga strip of suit.- 7
able sheet metal afliliuilhdes the body portion 15%;;which is; prev-lace. with an aperture 19 designed t?) receive the extremity of the bolt 15. l The cap engaging member is detachably secured to the closure and may be from by removing the nut 16. Thus, the
.cap engaging member. may be removed and adjacent one extremity as at 20, the portion of the strip'so bentextending to provide a substantially triangular or arrow shaped head 21, the strip being transversely notched as'at 22 upon either side at the inner extremity of thehead 21 to provide a shank 23 and-to also provide oppositely disposed readily attached thereto or detached theresaid sides are reversely beveled to form cutting edges 27,
As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, when the closure 1.2 is applied to the neck 10 of the jar, the cap engaging member will be forced through the disk 11, the cutting edges formed on the head 21 of said member readily piercing the disk, The cap engaging member 17 is so formed that when thus engaged with the disk, the disk will be disposed upon the shank 23 of said member between the oppositely disposed shoulder 24: 21Ild 25, the head 12 preferably being forced entirely through the .disk. lVhen thus engaged tl1e,closure 12 is slightly ro-- tated by the handle it upon the neck of the jar causing the shoulders 24 formed at one extremity of the head of the cap engaging member to assume a position slightly out of alinement with the incision made in the disk by the insertion of the head. lhe shoulders Q-t'are thus caused to securely ene'a the disk and as will be readily obvious, the removal of the closure 12 from the jar will also effect the extraction of the dish 11.
. In forming the head of the disk engaging member 17, l have sought to provide a construction such as will readily pierce the disk and have accordingly formed the head with. a relatively sharp piercing point 28, the side edges of the head being provided with reversely disposed cutting edges 27 which converge toward the piercing point. By this construction a very slight pressure upon the closure will cause'the cap engaging member to pierce the disk 11 and danger of forcing the disk inwardly of the neck of the jar or otherwise displacing the disk is reduced to a minimum. It will be further noted that the disk 11 when ongaged by the member 17 is held thereon between the shoulders 25k and 25 and thus,
in extracting the disk from the jar, the disk will be retained upon the member 17 until manually removed therefrom. It is to be understood that the cap engaging member 17 is preferably formed of suitable non-- corrosive metal so that it may not affect the milk contained in the jar. However, parvided v greater ticular attention is called to thefact that for any reason the cap engaging member 1'? should become corroded, or broken, or it. for any other reason it should become necessary to remove the member and substitute a new cap engaging member, this desired result may be readily effected, Furthermore, in .making, the cap enga ing member l7 detao. able from the closure 12, the manufacture ofmy improved device has been found to be much simplified, While at-the same time a thoroughly efticient construction is pro-- Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described including a closure, a handle carried by'the closure, a cap engaging member carried thereby, and a bolt extending through the handle, the closure, and the cap engaging member, said bolt connecting the handle and the cap on gaging member-to the closure, said cap engaging member being formed from suitable sheet metal and including a body portion bent adjacent one extremity at substantially right angles to form. a depending portion terminating in substantially triangular shaped head arranged upon one side of the vertical axis of the closure andhaving rercrsely l'reveled sides forming cutting edges 2, A device of the character described including a closure, a handle extending yertically upon. one side of the closure, a cap engaging member arranged upon the opposite side of the closure, said cap engaging member being formed from, a strip of sui able sheet metal bent intermediate its ends to provide a substantially flat body portion seating against the closure and a Vertically arranged head provided with a piercing: point and haying transversely arranged shoulders formed thereon, and a bolt errtendingthrough the handle, he closure and the body portion of the cap engaging member, saidbolt detaehably connecting the handle and the cap engaging member with the closure.
In testimony whereof I afilx my signature in presence of two witnesses. lVlLLlAM OgldEli'Cl'lEPi. {"1 s j l Vitnesses:
