LAMP-CI-XIMNEY HOLDER.
Specificationof Letters Batent.
Patented May 18, 1315.
Application filed March 3, 1915. Serial No. 11,887.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that-l, PAUL DODOKIN, a sub ject of the King of England, residing at Langbank, in the Province of Saskatchewan, Dominion of Canada, have-invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp- Ohimney Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved lamp chimney holder, and has for its primary object to provide means for securely holding a lamp chimney in place upon the burner but also permitting of a certain amount of expansion and contraction of the glass to thereby obviate breakage of the chimney.
The invention has for a further object to provide a chimney holder mounted upon the lamp burner, which requires no adjustment or manipulation in order to place the chimney in position upon the burner or removev the same.
It is an additional object of my invention to produce a device of the above character which is very serviceable and convenient in practical use, and highly efficient for the purpose in View.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lamp burner showing a chimney held in position thereon by means of my invention; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a fragment of the holding spring and one of the supporting arms.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates the body of the burner which is provided upon its outer edge with a plurality of resilient upstanding arms 6. The upper ends of these arms are inwardly curved, as indicated at 7, and to the same, the longitudinally and transversely curved horizontally disposed plates 8 are suitably fixed. These plates are preferably constructed of brass and may be of any desired length or width.
A continuous annular spring 9 is mounted upon the upper ends of the resilient clamping arms 7 This spring is constructed from a single length of wire of requisite tensile strength, and between the convolutions thereof, the upper ends of the arms 7 are disposed, the horizontal plates on said arms extending longitudinally within this coil spring. The upper and lower edges of these plates engage the spring coils at approximately diametrically opposite points,
while the convex faces of the plates are opposed to the inner portions of the spring coils.
11 designates the lamp chimney which is provided at its base with an annular groove 12. This base portion of the chimney is adapted to be forced downwardly within the circular series of spring coils so as to rest upon the rim of the burner body. W hen in position, the annular spring coil is forced inwardly by the resilient arms 7 into this groove 12, and said spring coils held in clamping engagement with the base portion of the chimney. Thus, it will be apparent that the chimney is securely held upon the burner against accidental displacement. In the event, however, that the glass chimney should expand under the intense heat, the coils of the annular spring will yield sufficiently to minimize the resistance to such expansion, and thus obviate fracture or breakage of the glass.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen thatl have produced an exceedingly eflicient and desirable holding device for lamp chimneys, which does not re quire manual manipulation in any manner in order to permit of the mounting of the chimney upon the burner or its removal therefrom.
The wire of which the annular spring is formed, is preferably, although not necessarily, of brass, and the coils may be of any desired diameter, in accordance with the particular size and construction of the chimney which is to be held thereby. The horizontally disposed plates on the upper ends of the resilient guard arms may be of other forms than that shown in the drawing. it will, therefore, be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the specific structural features of the device, as they are illustrated in the drawing, but reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described m inve'n tion, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is l. The combination with a lamp burner and chimney, said burner being provided zontally disposed plates upon the upper ends of said arms arranged within the spring and yieldably holding the spring coils in engagement with the base of the lamp chimney. V. r V
2. Alamp burner and a chimney provided with an annular groove at: its base, said burner having a series of upwardly extending resilient arms, in combination with an annular coil spring, said arms projecting between the convolutions of the spring, and longitudinally and transversely curved horizontally-disposed. plates fixed to "the upper ends of said arms and disposed-within the spring to yieldingly hold the spring coils within'the groove in the base of the lamp chimney. I
In testimony whereof I hereunto 'aiiiX my signaturev inothe presence of two witnesses.
