Y STORAGE HAT-30X.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4, 1915.
Application filed September 10, 1914. Serial No. 861,113.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE RANDOLPH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Storage Hat- Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
This invention relates to storage hat boxes, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a hat box made of sheet metal and provided with a centrally hinged cover, said hat box being made substantially the shape of a sailor hat to contain straw hats and keep them in proper condition' free from dust and contact with other articles and to keep them in shape and prevent crushing by contact.
Another object of the invention is to provide a metal hat box having means for suspending the same from the side of a w all or from a garment hook and said hat box having a hinged cover and a latch for holding the cover closed, said box being flat upon its under side so that it can be placed upon a shelf and will not be injured by piling other articles upon the same.
The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which, 7
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a metal hat box made in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section, and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary section made upon a larger scale than the other views.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates the base of the hat box, said base being made of sheet metal of the required gage and provided with an annular flange 2 at its outer edge. A strip of metal 3 is secured to the flange 2 and extends entirely around the base 1 of the hat box to give proper strength to the structure.
Spaced from the base portion 1 is the brim cover 4 which has an annular flange 5 fitting over the rim 3 as shown more clearly in Fig. 4. The crown portion 6 of the box has a semi-circular top 7 and these two parts are made rigid with the portion 4 of the box and at the angle between the brim 4 and the crown portion 6 is a triangular brace 8, one upon each side as shown in Fig. 2. A flat ring 9 extends around at the junction of the members 1 and 6 and inside the top of the crown a corner piece of angular construction 10 adds strength to the box at this point.
The door or cover which gives access to the interior of the hat box comprises a crown portion 11 of semi-circular form connected by hinges 12 to the crown portion 7 and said cover is provided with the curved front member 13 and the brim cover 14, the latter being provided with a suitable latch 15 for holding the box closed. As shown the latch 15 is in the form of a turn button having an angular member 16 to engage the rim 3 and the angular flange 2. Connected to the outer edge of the brim portion of the box is a metal loop 17 by means of which the hat box may be suspended from a nail or hook against a wall. The loop 17 being hinged it may be turned fiat so that the box may lie upon a shelf.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a metal hat box made in accordance with this invention is simple in construction, will pre-jt' serve a hat 1n 1ts proper condltlon from one season to another withoutpossibility of accidents either to crush the hat or permit it to become soiled and the hat box as a whole may be made of metal to be durable and may be japanned or otherwise coated to prevent rust or injuring the hat.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claims.
What is claimed is 1. A sheet metal hat box comprising a base having an annular flange, a metal rim connected to said flange, a body portion having a brim cover and a crown portion, a triangular brace at the junction of said brim cover and crown portion, a hinged cover, a latch for holding said cover closed and a loop connected to the edge of the brim portion for suspending the hat box from a wall.
2. Ahat box made of sheet metal and comprising a base having a flange, a rim conrim of the base, and means for suspending nected to said flange, a spaced upper brim the hat box. 10 portion, a crown portion, a triangular brace In testimony whereof I affiX my signature between said brim and crown portion, asemiin presence of two witnesses.
circular crown portion, and a cover hinged THEODORE RANDOLPH. to said crown portion, said cover being in Witnesses:
the form of one-half of a hat and provided BERNARD MOLINAR,
with a latch at its outer edge to engage the THOMAS MOMAHON.
Uopies of this patent may be obtained for'five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
