MAIL-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14., 1916.
Application filed November 13, 1913. Serial No. 800,828.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA H. SARE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sentinel, in the county of Washita and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mail-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to mail boxes of that class adapted to be used primarily along rural routes and an object of the invention is to provide a box that will reliably protect its contents against the elements and have convenient accessibilities to the interior thereof. And a further object is to provide a locking means for the box so disposed as to be removed from contact with snow, rain, or the like.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the accompanying specification.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a mail box showing the same mounted upon a support. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view through the box showing the box in open position, and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the box in closed and locked position.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the box which comprises a body portion 2 and a cover 3, said cover and body portion being constructed in any preferred design or shape, the cover 3 being hingedly secured to the body 2 by means of pivots 4: which are located adjacent one end of the body and cover so that the cover can be readily swung upwardly to gain access to the interior of the body and to permit the cover to swing in an arc of a circle. The forward edges of the side walls of the body are inclined.
In order to protect the contents of the box against the elements, a downwardly and outwardly extending flange 5 is provided on the lower edge of the cover 3, while the open end of the body 2 is likewise provided with a downwardly and outwardly extending flange 6 with which the flange 5 cooperates when the cover is inclosed position.
In providing means for locking the cover in closed position I provide a wire member of substantially distorted Ushape having a straight portion 7 extending in line with the front wall of the cover and an upper and lower leg section 8 and 9, the leg sections extending at an angle and inclined upwardly from the straight section, the upper leg 8 extending through the straight portion of the front wall of the cover and the lower leg 9 through the flange 5 and at right angles to said flange. The wire member projects inwardly and downwardly through an opening 10 formed partly in the base portion 11 of the body 2 and partly in the flange 6, a lock 12 being attached to the apex portion of said wire member so that the lock will be sheltered from the elements beneath the flanges 5 and 6 and the base of the body 2. In positioning the lock 12 under the flanges in the manner shown, it is obvious that the lock will not be aifected by snow, sleet ,or rain which would cause clogging or freezing of the same, thereby obviating considerable difficulty in opening the look.
This form of box is used primarily in rural districts and is mounted in any suitable manner upon a post 13 or other device through the medium of a supporting bracket 14, or otherwise.
What I claim is A mail box comprising a body having its base formed with an outwardly and downwardly flaring flange, a cover having straight walls and an outwardly and downwardly flaring base flange, said body portion having an opening in its base and flange, a wire member comprising a straight portion extending in line with one of the straight walls of the cover, an upper and lower leg section integral with said straight portion and extending upwardly at an angle to said straight portion, the upper leg engaging the straight wall of the cover and the lower leg engaging the flange of the cover In testimony whereof I have signed my and extending at right angles thereto, the name to this specification in the presence of apex of said Wire member extending through two subscribing Witnesses.
said opening in the base member and flange, IRA H. SARE. 5 and a lock detachably secured to the apex Witnesses portion of said Wire member and positioned G. O. SHIELDs,
below the box base and flange. F. M. POTTER.
