To all whomc't may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT B. DICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Lake Forest, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Holders, of which the following is a specification.-
This invention relates to type-holders for holding type in such a way as to facilitate the operations of setting up and distributing a form of type.
The invention is of special application to type-holders of this character for use in eou-' nection with small printing equipments adapted to be operated by persons of relatively little skill, suchfor instance, as printing equipments for ofiice use. i
The object of the invention is to effect certain improvements in the construction of type-holders of this character which will make them'more convenient to use and which holding members having closing devices are employed, one at each end of the several units, and each closing device has a bar for eachmit-which bar is adapted to extend along'the ends of all of the slots of one unit. 7 The invention further involves the provision of a movable locking means for holding the several units in position upon the frame, this locking means being movable so that whenever it is desired to do so any one of pieces 13 to enter within the ways 11 in the units may be withdrawn from the frame for the purpose of inspection or repair or the substitution'of anew unit.
By reason of the provision of the locking and holding means above mentioned, the.
type-holding units may be removably sup ported upon the frame of the holder, but when the holder is being transportedor when it is not in use, there-is no danger Specification of Letters Patent.

whatever of displacement of a unit. -Also, when the type-holder is not in use, thereis no .danger of the type escaping from their respective-slots because thenthe ends of the slots through. which the type must pass to escape are closed; these ends of the slots may however be readily opened to permit the withdrawal of type when setting up a form and to permit the; entrance of type when distributing.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- V Figure 1 is a frontview of the type-holder broken away in part, Fig. 2 is a partial top view of the holder, Fig. 3 is a central section of the holder and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views hereinafter referred to.
Referring to these drawings, the type holder consists of a frame formed from two side- members 6 and 7 which are mounted upon a base 8 and connected by suitable cross rods 9. These side- frames 6 and 7 have pairs of parallel guides or ways secured thereto. In the present instance, three pairs of parallel guides 10 are shown. Each of these guides has a grooveor way 11 formed therein as shown in Figs. 1 and 8. Each pair of parallel guides is adapted to support a type-holding unit, this unit being slidable 'into' the ways'll from the top thereof.
Each type-holding unit consists of. end I members 12 and 13 at the top and bottom and a plurality of strips 14 extending between these end members and forming between them type-receiving slots in which type 15 are movable. Each of these strips 14: has a groove 16 cut in each side thereof to form ways in which projections on the type 15 are received. The end members .12
and 13 and the strips 14 extending between them are all secured together and constitute the frame of the holder. For the pieces 12 are extended at their ends slightly beyond the ends of the provide projections adapted to the supports 10. At their extreme upper edges, the upper end pieces 12 are extended as shown at 17 to provide projections which will engage the upper ends of thesupports or guides 10 to arrest the downward movement of the type-holding unit in theguides 1( when the unit has 7 reached the proper position;

The lower end piece 13 of each type-holding unit has a plurality of projections 18 thereon, each lying in line with one of thetype-holding slots to check the downward movement of the type. But the sides of the type-holding slots are cut away immediately adjacent to the projections 18 so that the end type in each slot may be raised vertically out of the slot. This cutting away of the sides of the slots for a distance equal to the length of one type is shown at 19 in Fig. 1.
Movement of type out of the lower ends of the type-receiving slots when the typeholder' is not in use is precluded by the provision of closing devices which may be moved into position for preventing such movement of the type or into position for permitting such movement when setting up a form of type. These closing devices consist of bars, each adapted to extend across a type-holding unit and all of them mounted upon the same support so that they move-together. Two arms 20 are pivotally mounted upon the sideframes 6 and? to turn about the same axis and a plurality of bars 21', one for each unit, extend between these arms 20 and are secured'at their ends thereto. Preferably each bar 21 is of angular cross section as shown in Fig. 8. When the arms 20 are in the position shownjin Fig. 3, the bars 21 overlie the printing faces of theend type in the several rows. The arms 20 maybe swung around on their pivot so as to carry the bars 21 away from the type to positions where they will not obstruct removal of the type." i V Detachable locking means are provided for holding the arms 20 in the positions in which they are shown in Fig. 3. The'preferred construction of this lock is that shown in Fig. 5. Each arm 20 has. a strip 22 secured thereto bent to extend around the edge of the adjacent side-frame and carrying a small tubular member 23' in which a plunger 24 is movably mounted. This plunger 24 is pressed forward by a spring 25 and is provided with a. button 26 whereby it may be withdrawn against the tension oi. its spring 25. The side-frames are provided with holes'into which the ends otthe'plungers 241 are received and also. with inclined notches 27 which serve to retract the plungers 241 when the 'arms' 20 are moved to the closed position so that'manual. manipulatype-holding units against upward movement in the ways 11 and this locking means is independent of the closing devices for closing the upper ends of the type-receiving slots. Two arms 30 are pivotally mounted upon the side- frames 6 and 7 to turn about the same axis as the arms 28 andthese two arms 30 are connected at their free ends by a cross rod 31. Each of the arms 30 has three studs 32 thereon projecting inwardly from the inner side of the arm and each of these studs is adapted to overlie the upper edge ofone of the cross-members 12 of a type-holding unit when the arms 80 are in their Fig.- 3, position. In Fig. 3, the studs 32 are shown in dotted lines'coacting with shoulders upon the ends of the pieces 12. vVhen in this position, the studs preclude upward movement of the type-holding units so that the unit's areheld in the positions in which they are shown. Each of the arms 30 is provided with a locking device 33 of a construction similar in all respects to that shown in Fig. 5 except for'the absence of the supporting piece '22. These locking devices 33' areadapted to coact with the sideframes 6 and 7' to hold thearms 30' inthe locking positions in which they are shown. The arms 28 are pivotallymounted on the same axis as the arms and they overlie the arms 30 so that whenarmSBO are moved they carry arms 28 with them. 'Butthe arms 28 may be moved independently-jofthe arms 80. These three retaining devices would be maintained in their closed positions when transporting the holder and when the holder: is not in use'to preclude disarrangementof the-parts, but anyone or all of these retaining means may be moved to itsinoperative position at any time to permit of the desired movements of the type and the type units.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows 1. A:,type-holder comprising tion of a frame,zha.ving pairs of guides thereon, a pluralityof units, each I'BHIOV. ably mounted on one of said pairs of guides, each unit comprising a plurality of typereceiving members having type-slots therein, means for locking said units in said-frame, and means movable as a unit into positions for preventing or permitting passage of type out of the ends of all of the slots, substantially as set forth.

A type-holder comprising the combination of a frame, a plurality of rows of typereceiving members thereon, each member having a slot in which the type are movable, means mounted on the frame and movable as a unit into positions for preventing or permitting passage of type out of the ends of all the slots, and a locking device for holding saidmeans in its slot-closing position,

A type-holder comprising the combination of' a frame, supports thereon having vertically-disposed guides, a plurality of type-receiving members each having a slot down which typeareslidable, supported in said guides and removable therefrom only from the, top, and aloekmg devicemovably mounted on the frame, and movable into and out of position for preventing ,the removal, of all of said members from the guides, andmeans for holding said device in position for preventing such removal, substantially as set forth.

A type-holder comprising the combination of a frame, supports thereon having vertically-disposed guides, a plurality of type-receiving members each having a slot down which type are slidable, supported in 9. A type-holder comprising the combination of a frame, supports thereon, a plurality of units each consisting-0f a plurality of type rec'eiving members having slots ther'einand each mounted removably upon the frame by coaction With said supports, pivoted arms mounted on the frame, locks for holding the arms in a predetermined position, and means on said arms for holding said units in position upon said supports, substantially as set forth.
