SLIP OR BILL HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 29, 191%.
Application filed October 29, 1908, Serial No. 460,138. Renewed. October 26, 1916. Serial No. 127,969.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. WILDMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Landover, in the county of Prince Georges and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slip or Bill Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a device for holding slips or sheets, more particularly to a clip or supporting device for holding sales slips on the bill-holding leaf of a credit or filing appliance.
One object of the invention is to secure a slip or slips in position upon the billholder leaf of a filing appliance in a simple manner.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for supporting the clip at different positions relative to the bill holding leaf or book according to the number of slips inserted in place.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel means for engaging the bill slips near their upper and lower edges.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for releasing the bill slips and for maintaining the clip in released position.
Further objects of the invention will be obvious from the following description and claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a bill-holding leaf provided with means, embodying my invention, for supporting and holding sales slips.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of a series of bill holding leaves provided with my sales slip supporting clips.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view, illustrating details of construction.
In the drawings, 1 represents a base, adapted to suitably support a plurality of bill holding leaves 2, 2. The base and bill holding leaves may be constructed in any suitable or preferred manner.
3, 3 indicate partitions, ribs, or rubbing strips secured to the face of each leaf or back 2, and preferably extending from top to bottom thereof. These partitions are preferably formed of sheet metal bent upon itself to form double walls 3, 3, and are provided with flanged edges 3 whereby they may be conveniently secured to the leaf. 2 indicates a cross strip on which the bill slips rest when in position, the strips cooperating with the side walls 3, 3, to form pockets for the bill slips.
4, 4 indicate the clips which transversely retain the upper portions of the sales slips or bills in position, each comprising a substantially U-shaped rod. 4' 4: indicate arms, formed by bending outwardly the opposite ends of the rod 4.
5, 5 indicate slots formed in the side , walls 3, 3, and each provided with an enlarged portion 5 at its upper end. The arms 4, 4: are preferably flattened in cross section and slidably fit into the slots 5, 5. By reference to the drawings, it will be seen that the clips are non-rotatably supported and that the flattened ends of the arms 4, 4 are positively held in such position relative to the face of the adjacent leaf or back 2 as to normally hold the clip a parallel with and close against the face of the bill holding leaf or back. It will also be understood that the characteristics of the clips 4L to resist torsional strains will result in yieldingly securing bill slips in place against the adjacent leaf or back 2. When the clips 4 are raised, as by catching hold of a fingerpiece 6, the arms a, 4: enter the enlarged portions 5 and permit the clip to pivotally swing outwardly and upwardly. l/Vhen the clip is thus operated the bill slips may be readily removed or inserted.
7 indicates an auxiliary clip extending transversely between the opposite walls 3, 3, and slidably mounted in slots 7, 7, formed therein. Among other things, this clip 7 operates to press and hold the lower portions of the bill slips on the bill holding leaf 2.
8 indicates a device connected with the clip at and preferably arranged midway between its sides. The device 8 may be formed from a section of flat material. It depends downwardly from the clip a: and when said clip is in engagement with the slips, it bears against the said slips in a vertical direction and assists in holding them flat against the adjacent leaf. The lower end of said device 8 may be connected with the clip 7 whereby both clips will be operated simultaneously to permit the insertion or removal of bill slips. In this form of the invention the ends of the device 8 are preferably turned over or around the clips 4 and 7 and form a loose pivotal connection therewith.
Each of the slots 7, 7, may be provided with an offset 7 to receive the opposite ends of the clip 7 and thereby hold it and the clip 4: raised in position.
9 indicates a spring for holding the clip 7 in the offset 7 The slots 5, 5, 7, 7", are preferably inclined downwardly and toward the leaf or back 2, parallel to each other, in order that the clips 4: and 7, when being lowered to clamp the bill slips, will accommodate themselves to the number of slips to be supported in place. By this construction, from one to a large number of slips may be securely held in place behind each clip.
As the clips 4 not only slide upwardly a distance equal to the length of the slots 5, 5, but also swing outwardly and upwardly, when the arms i, f enter the enlargements 5", the slots 7 are elongated, as shown at 7*, to permit the clips 7 to slide upwardly a distance substantially equal to this combined movement.
To those skilled in the art of making devices of the class described, many alterations in construction and widely differing embodiments and applications of my inven tion will suggest themselves, without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims. My disclosures and description herein are purely illustrative, and are not intended to be in any sense limiting.
